Quantity over Quality

I play with the idea of turning into an online writer. I bought this ebook full of information on how to do it, written by a person that is making $ 5,000 to $ 10,000 a month writing for others. Admittedly, that person has been at it for quite some years, and I wish her all the best. Reading it, what struck me first was the statement that writing online is NOT about quality, but quantity. According to her, most Americans read at 4th grade level, and they wouldn’t know the difference between a good and a bad article. Pretty cynical, hey? She says you have to be able to type quickly and write A LOT if you want to make money that way. Just churn out the stuff, and things will be fine. I don’t dispute what she’s saying here, I guess she knows, but how do you feel about it? Is quality in writing a thing of the past? I myLot an expression of that tendency?

Hi Pillusch, actually writing at 4th grade level is much harder, especially when you want to write about swine flu, pandemics, cancer prevention, personal finance, personal development and other current affairs. Quantity is important, but that doesn't mean quality is not important. The search engine will penalize articles full of grammar and spelling mistakes. I doubt most buyers will tolerate an article with so many typo errors. Probably the way she put it is very crude, that's why you feel that good writers do not write quality articles. I think she is talking about recycling a writing idea. Sometimes it is possible to use the same idea, worded it different, and produces ten articles.

Don't write off quality writing because this person says so, or that most Americans read at a 4th grade level, i was reading at a 9th grade level when i was in 4th grade, many other people read way above a 4th grade level, that doesn't mean you need to write to the intellectual level of college scholars, but you still shouldn't sell out and crap out work that isn't to the best of your ability

In online writing it does seem that quantity can bring in more money than quality. But as someone who's a professional writer and enjoys writing, I just can't bring myself to crank out crappy stuff quickly! I guess I try for a happy medium... not taking as much time to write something as I would a magazine article for a famous publication, but not writing something so quickly that it's full of typos and mistakes.

Well, if we are talking about online, I guess quantity does give us and edge. Just imagine if you have a hundreds and thousand of articles working for you online. The earnings would most likely be great. Though having a good quality would eventually result to more readers or visitors but the thing is, it would take time to gain visitors. But having a lot of articles all working for you 24 hours a day would eventually give you more opportunities for earnings.

Really...quantity versus quality. I definitely choose quality but if quantity can make me much more money, then why not. But I'm not really in to making e-book. I sucked doing those.

I think the quality has to come first. It's all very well for these ebook writers to say quantity is important, but wait until you try to sell poor quality work and you'll find out which is most important. The most successful online writers have a big presence, which is earned by the quality of your writing. While it's quite possible that some readers don't know the difference between good and bad content, the majority do, and they will vote with their feet.

I think some one make more money by quantity, and some one may make more money only because has high quality. For me, I prefer quality.

Thanks to the Internet, anyone who can churn up around 400 words about a given topic and post it on a blog or website can now claim to be a writer. What does it matter that they are writing on a 4th grade level? As long as they're earning they can get away with it. Or so they think. They seem to forget the fact that every low quality writing that they're spreading out online is a disrespect to their readers whose intellect they are degrading. And what does that make these so-called writers in the long run? What kind of legacy are they going to leave to the world? So for me, it's still quality over quantity. Most people, even 4th graders, still appreciate quality writing. Otherwise, J.K. Rowling wouldn't have earned her millions and the world would've never known Harry Potter. As for mylot... not all people here are writers. A big number of the members don't speak English fluently, but some admit that they are here to learn. They shouldn't be deprived of the chance to learn what is quality writing and what is not.
