Uninvited Neighbors

I have this neighbor who likes to invite himself over and it's driving me nuts. I'm too nice to tell him to go away, so I don't know what to do. He came over yesterday while I was on the phone and just walked right in when I opened the door. I even told him I was on the phone!! I just thought that was rude and should have stayed on the phone and ignored him. I know he's one who doesn't like to stay home alone, but I am!! I enjoy having the house to myself and I'm not big on having guests over, but I just don't know how to tell him to go away. I think I just might have to NOT answer the door when he comes over unannounced. But tonight, he was bringing over some food for me, which is really nice. I thought he was just going to drop it off, but he came in and sat down to eat some with me (and even spilled some and not only didn't clean it up, but didn't tell me about it). Now, the way people eat will often annoy me. I can't stand when people eat noisily and he eats noisily! UUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHH!!! :(

I have had neighbors like that, but they are usually much older. I had one neighbor in her '90s who grew up in the same house that she lived in now. Back in the '40s, nobody locked their doors so she was perfectly comfortable just coming next door and coming in. I've also had friends who would totally invite themselves to dinner. Annoying, but understandable.

I would be getting a guard-dog or something, if that ever happened to me. I guess I am not the kind of person to live in small towns. LOL Thanks God I live in a city with an excuse to keep my doors locked, after my next door neighbour almost got murdered, and I saved his life. hahahaha If i want to interact with people (besides you, Vlad!) I'll go to the coffee shop.

I always keep my doors locked and thankfully, he doesn't just open the door and walk in all on his own. When I open the door, he just walks right in. I don't even step aside and give the signal to "come in". It just drives me nuts and I find it rude, so I think I'm just going to stop answering the door.

You can either wait till he does it again and ask him to please call first because while you appreciate his company (sometimes) you are busy, and sometimes just need time to yourself, or, if you don't want to wait for even one more uninvited visit, just leave a nice note, possibly a Thank You note for the food, with a PS that because you are often busy, would he please pay you the courtesy of calling first.

Unfortunately, he calls too much, too. I'm thinking that I'm just going to stop answering the door. Or when I do decide to open the door, I'm going to try to just open it a tiny bit and peek my head out and HOPE that he understands that it means not to come in. I'm still not going to answer the door every time, though.
