Freebirthing...

I just watched a tv program on the Discovery Health Channel. It was about this thing called "Freebirthing". Apparantly, women across the globe are choosing to have their babies at home without any kind of medical assistance whatsoever. No doctor, no midwife, nothing. No medical training. I personally don't think that this is a very good idea. I am a mother of 4. All 4 pregnancies were completely normal. The first three, I could very well have had at home with no help. My 3rd actually almost was born at home because she was born in an hour, and we live 4 minutes away from the hospital. But the 4th baby was a different story. For one thing, he decided to come a month early for no reason whatsoever. I didn't even know that I was in labor, but didn't feel quite "right". When I got to the hospital, they told me that I was indeed in labor and that they could not stop it because I was fully dilated. But there was one problem. They couldn't feel my son. He was actually laying sideways with his head literally stuck in my ribs. They had to perform an emergency c-section. I had to have a partial hysterectomy due to the fact that they had to cut me so bad and I would not stop bleeding. I lost over half of the blood in my body. They had to crack my ribs just to get him unstuck. They saved our lives. If I had been like these women, we both would have died. Are they not thinking about that? One of the women on the show actually said that she refuses to think about the worst-case scenario. Well, she needs to. She needs to realize that even though childbirth is a wonderful and natural thing, it is very dangerous for both mother and baby. I think that there should at least be a licensed an experienced midwife present. I'm sure that there are people out there who will disagree with me, and that is ok. We all have our opinions. I think these women are not exactly crazy, but they need to think more about what they are doing. They are putting their children at risk for their own personal selfish reasons. You can always have medical personnel present without having them interfere until it becomes necessary. Why do they think that so many women and babies once died during childbirth? And they still do. Have they forgotten about this due to the fact that it has become so much safer for women who seek medical attention? I don't know. But I want to know what you think.

I live in Europe. I remember seeing a program about free birthing and I found it fascinating. I admired the ladies and was glad nothing went wrong for them. Personally I wouldn't have the courage to have a free birth. I like a natural birth at home but with two midwifes present. That way I can have a relaxing birth but know that I have full support should it be necessary. For my first birth I had a water pool and gas plus air. I had a retained placenta and so I had to go to hospital to manual removal. I found out at 36 weeks in my second pregnancy that my baby would have spina bifida. I still had a home birth. I didn't have any pain relief. My second son was taken into special baby care for three weeks and he needed 2 operations. My first labor lasted 8 hours. My second labor lasted 2 and a half hours. I hope for another easy birth next time with my daughter. I am 39 weeks pregnant and have got my home birth kit waiting.

I hope that everything has turned out alright with your last birth. I went out of town and just now read your response. I think it is wonderful that you did not have any pain meds with your previous deliveries. I did not have any with my first three children, and only because of the c-section did I have it with my fourth. I find nothing wrong with a midwife present. I looked for one myself, but we do not have any near here. I like the idea of someone standing quietly by. But at the same time, they are there if there is need for help. Your labors sound like mine. My first was 8.5 hours, my second was 3 hours, my third was 1.5 hours, and my fourth, I didn't even know I was in labor except for the bleeding. That is the only reason I went to the hospital in the first place. Anyway, I truly hope that everything has gone well for you, and that you and your family are doing wonderful. And congratulations!!!

My third birth was a home birth again. I had mild contractions in the morning. In the early afternoon I called for a midwife because the pain was getting stronger. She arrived and ten minutes later the waters came and one minute later I began pushing. My baby girl was born and she looked beautiful. Unfortunately delivering the placenta was challenging and I lost ever such a lot of blood. I went to hospital in an ambulance.
