why dint GANDHI (father of INDIAN nation) die?

yesterday my friend asked me,though gandhi fighted for freedom of INDIA why dint he die during the process.like there were lot of mass killing happening where gandhi was not there,but the mob were guided my gandhi.i hope you all understand my question.was is his luck or he dint wanted to die so he sent his followers,so whats your opinion?
