Making Films & Videos - Career in Film with Physics?

Hello, I am currently studying physics at university. I have always wanted to work in the film industry, but have never academically studied film. It’s my own passion for film that has driven me to learn more, in particular the history and technique of special effects. This is ultimately what I would like to work on, visual effects. My problem is I have no idea where to start with my career. I have no experience in using computer programs used within the industry, but would like to think I have good physics knowledge! I am more interested in the practical/physical side of visual effects than the computer side, so to speak. Could you give me any advice on where to start looking, or any courses that are vital to me achieving this career? Many Thanks
