Have you ever had an exotic pet? What kind? What was it like? Why did you choose the type of animal you had? What were some of the differences in caring for an exotic pet?

I have a Wolfdog. His name is Lobo...he's black with yellow eyes. Biiiiigggggg and fluffy. Tremendous dog and super strong. He loves to howl only when he's not comfortable. In his eyes you can see love, anger or hunting abilities depending what's going on at the time. He's unique and we love him a lot!

MysticMoonLuLu, sorry it took me so long to answer. Been offline for about a year. Good to hear someone else has the wonderful experience of getting to know a wolf.

I used to own a 3/4 wolf hybrid, and he was one of the best dogs that I ever had the opportunity to own. There are a lot of differences in caring for exotic pets, like some of them require special diets that cost lots of money, or are more prone to sickness, which leads to large veterinary bills.

Hello Latalia, Layla was 1/2 wolf...and like you say, she was one of the smartest and most loyal animals it's been my privilege to know. I plan on someday having another...the training and bonding with them is what intrigues me.

I have an exotic pet. She is an African Grey Parrot. They are so intelligent that if you do not interact with them on the proper level they can go insane just like a human. Her vocabulary is so great that I stopped counting after it went over 600 words. She has words in five languages and can say hello and good bye in serveral more. We just move 1200 miles to a totally different place and environment and I became very concerned for her because she did not like one of the people in the house in which we are living. Fortunately this person is leaving today. She seems to sense this and has calmed down considerably. Shalom~Adoniah

Thank you so much for responding Adoniah. You didn't tell us her name? I had an Amazon Green Parrot when I was in high school. His name was Sherman. I had to give him to my best friend, whom he loved, because of my brother's allergies. The last time I heard from her she still had him....thirty years later. I have read that parrots are very intelligent birds. Your's seems very smart.

This place I used to donate to, Wildlife Waystation, had several wolf hybrids that they had taken in when their families couldn't handle them any more. They used to warn their visitors off. Something about them wanting to behave like wolves and also dogs and the two things were so different that they acted like paranoid schizophrenics. But anyway, I guess the most exotic pet we had when I was a kid was a mallard duck and a desert tortoise. They were really quite easy to care for. The tortoise was found on the side of a road or something and the duck was a prize at a Scout craft fair.

Our landlord raised ducks and geese. One of his ducks had a nest under our porch. She ran off and left an egg...just about to hatch, when her others had all hatched. It was still kinda cold out in the spring...so we took in the egg and hatched it. (fully hatched by the next day) My granddaughter had heard my story of how a black African Goose had bit my nose when I was a little girl, and I had constantly warned her about going near the geese outside...and that baby duck had her cornered one day standing in front of her quacking! She was hysterical! I made the mistake of laughing...and she still reminds me of it seven years later! lol As for my wolf hybrid..she was the best behaved animal I've ever had. I raised her as a wolf pack would have raised her...and made her know that I WAS the alpha female! The ARE pack animals and should not be owned if you are just going to tie them up in the yard..the definately need socialization and you do need to know how a wolf pack interacts.

I had a wolf hybrid, but one day he got out and someone else must have took him in because we looked everywhere right after he went and we couldn't find him, and put signs up too. I was very sad, he was so very beautiful and I loved him very much. I hope to own another dog like that someday, but hopefully I will have a house with a big place for it to run, or near the woods for it to run in. Wolves like to roam naturally.

Yes, they definately need a place to roam. It is cruel to keep an animal locked up or caged up. They get psychotic like people would.
