How Far Will South Africa Go in 2010?

South Africa has a young team that did fairly well in the Confederations Cup. Well, the team lost the broze medal match to Spain. I feel the team has surprised many people for getting to the semi final stage of the competition. My question is, will South African team be able to build on this measure of success to do better in next 2010's FIFA World Cup competition to be hosted by South Africa? I'm eager to hear from all soccer lovers on this topic.

Hi emmanola, I hope South Africa can go far in 2010 World Cup final. That is important to keep the stadium full especially when it is involve the host. Without a fan of quarterly full stadium is not good especially in World Cup. South Africa team is quite impressive with their skill and commitment. But I think they still need the old hand like Benni McCarthy to help them. They are quite luck to be in 1 group with Iraq and New Zealand. This two team is not a good team compare to their host. But this luck will definitely missed when World Cup started. Most of the team is a very good team with well known player. If South Africa can avoid the "big" team from Europe and South Africa, they maybe go as far as 2nd round. But, if not, then they will be buried at the group stage. Miracle happen but its happen once in the blue moon. What happen in Japan and south Korea is one of those when South Korea reach semi final and Japan to second round. I hope I will see a good tournament in 2010 and less bad publicity. Not good for South Africa as a host country and not good for FIFA as an organizer. Thanks for this discussion and have a nice day.

Not a few persons are still asking why coach Joel Santana of South Africa left out the highly experienced Benni McCarthy from the squad that played the just concluded Confederations Cup. South Africa, to some extent, was lucky in the competition although they deserve the modest success they achieved. However, the world cup in 2010 is a different ball game altogether and the Bafana bafana team will require players with the right quality in terms of experience, dedication, skills and right mind and, maybe, a bit to luck to achieve anything worthwhile. I wish the South African team the very best of luck.

I believe they can qualify to somewhere around quarter-final, world cup is harder than confederations cup

It'l be great if South Africa can reach the quarter final stage in next year's world cup competition. However, that'll be a big mountain to climb because all other countries that are going to compete will come with great desire to win. Spain and Italy have been caged in this year's Confederations Cup; both teams will want to use South Africa 2010 to reassert their "authority".
