Mostly linux os is free, you can choose the right one for you. But if you are newbie with linux i suggest you to use Fedora or if you don't want to install you can use live cd like knoppix.

You mean alternatives to windows xp and linux? I don't think there are good alternatives to them rather than sneaking down the illegal path. You could install a windows rip or something, got no clue whether this is legal or not but at least it's faster than a normal windows system.

Linux has many different free versions you can download for an operating system. They even have a couple you can run from a cd or flash drive.
Companies like Cisco are switching over to other linux systems because of the security it has to offer, as well as writing your own scripts to work with what you or how you want somethings to run.
I plan on loading linux on my other laptop soon. I want to learn it, learn how to do the scripts and then work with detailing different types of scripts.
