From Wednesday midnight our petroleum ministry has again hiked the prices of petrol and diesel. The news can be found here http://www.zeenews.com/news543645.html The prices of petrol and diesel are administered in India by the government and has got no relation with the international crude oil prices. And due to this those who buy petrol have to pay more to subsidise the loss of lower prices in diesel which are intentionally kept low. This is not fair, I think. And hiking the prices of these two fuels will make the already high prices of essential commodities higher and out of reach of many poor people. This is also not helpful for development especially under present economic condition prevailing worldwide. What do you think about this move of the government? Do you think the step is justified?

It has happened many times. Government actually imposes many taxes on the crude. In relation to other countries, India has very high fuel prices. Government should do away with some of those taxes.

While viwing that news which will compel me to cut down my travelling I saw one more news that government is thinking of letting the oil companies decide the price. I think that is a welcome decision. Let the business do its business, no 'dadagiri' from the government is needed as long as they are doing nothing unfair.

I really don’t understand the economics of the oil industry. The last time the crude oil in international market rose so very high, I came across friends here in mylot, all saying how expensive oil has become. Then when globally the oil prices stabilized, friends here sighed with relief that all was well. But nothing like that ever happens in India. When the oil prices rise, everything rises…cost of essential commodities, transportation fares, non-essential goods…everything. But when the prices fall (like it did) there is no reduction in prices! We the middle class are the sufferers all the time. The rich have little worry and the poor get subsidized kerosene…nobody seems to be thinking about the middle-class anymore.

The middle class is there to bear all the heat, you have rightly said. Nobody thinks of this class. Unlike other countries, the price is controlled by the government and you know when government tries to control anything ......

This is not a pleasant news for us Indians. Time and again this has happened and the common people are the sufferers. The hike is not really justified to me. Does this mean the hike in prices of essential commodities as well?

As most of the goods are eventually transported to the ultimate consumers through roadways who are going to charge more for this hike, the prices are expected to go up. I thought so. Am I correct to presume that way?

Hey arkadeb it is not surprising news as it was expected. Before election to attract the voters govt reduced the rate. If fuel prices are increasing automatically prices of all commodities will be hiked as it is interlinked with fuel price. pkc3000

Hi pkc, you are right. The decrease was jut to woo the voters only. Now that election is over, they have go on their own.
