Is skype best way to make calls overseas

My friends suggested me to use skype so that i can keep in touch while travelling overseas or somewhere distance. I never knew about it. I just signed up an account and help me in using this service. Is it the best way or is there any other good sites or tools to be in touch with my friends and family

I like to use Skype when I make an international call. The cost is so low. I even think it is cheaper than making a call in my country. It can make PC-PC call which is totally free of charge. Or you can make PC-phone call and it is not expensive.
