can i lost my salvation

i met someone few days ago. he said one can not lost one's salvation. i tried to let him know that he can lost his salvation when he commit a sin and did not ask for forgiveness from god.i said to him the moment he commit sin he is separated from god and if one is separated from god at that time he has lost his salvation. he then said god has promised in the bible that he will never leave us nor forsake us. and i know it is there in the bible.he believes that the work of salvation on the cross was to remove sin permanently and that is. he said no matter what kind of sin he committed the blood automatically wash it away. he said once you have receive christ as your lord and personal savior you are a candidate of heaven irrespective of the life you leave. i tried to tell him what the bible says "shall we continue in sin that grace may abound" but he did not reason with me. i think he may be right. can some one really lost his salvation?
