Slightly Embarrassing Football Story

Once upon a time, I was a huge football fan. I love the Colts. So, I was out with friends at a sports bar watching every game that was playing, eating wings and having a great time. I had brought my husband (now ex) who wasn't a big sports fan...but was willing to come hang out. So, we sat there, in a packed (and I mean standing room only, took us until the second games started to get a table!) bar, and we are watching a Chargers game. It was fourth down, five or six yards to go...and they are in field goal range. So, the kicker comes out...kicks...and misses. My husband (who in retrospect should never have gone with me, because as soon as we got there he tried to act like a football fan), and says to me loudly to be heard over the cheers and moans of this kick..."Why did the Quarterback kick the ball, why didn't he just throw it in?" I swear, everyone around us got quiet. I wanted to crawl under the table and die. I quickly excused myself to go smoke...and it took me forever to go back in. Maybe it was then that I realized we weren't meant to be together. It was our last game we watched together. It remains a joke in my family. Whenever the QB screws up..we ask...why didn't he just kick it!!!

Your ex was obviously out of his depth. There is an obscure rule still on the books that allows a quarterback to drop kick the ball for a score. It has only been successfully done once in the last 60 years in the NFL. Doug Flutie did it with the Patriots back in 2006. Don't expect this play to make a comeback anytime soon. It's considered obsolete. I have no idea why it stays in the rule book.
