What is the Devil?

Do you believe in the existence of the Devil? I know many Myloters are atheists, but for you atheists (like me) what do you think Christians believe? If you are Christian, thanks for answering, I do appreciate it. I want to know what the Devil really is, or what the Bible says he is, or whatever. I know what he supposedly "does" to people, but I'm more interested in what you think the Devil, or Satan is.

Well this is a topic that can not have a condensed version. The concept today of the Devil or Satan has actualy morphed from it's original concept. There really is not evidence that Satan, Lucifer and the Devil and the serpent/dragon are one in the same unless you have the ability of linguistic criticism. What seems to be the earliest encounter with Evil is in the garden where Eve is talking to the Serpent. The word in Hebrew for Serpent used here is the word navhash. It is a common word that can be a noun meaning snake, but serpent or snake doesn't fit what Ezekiel and Isiah says, they talk about the same account but do not mention a snake or serpent. The word can have three other meanings. one of which means to 'shine'. So instead of a noun the word in genesis 3 could be a substantive participle rather than the noun, meaning "The Shinning One". Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28 confirm this understanding that a heavenly being was also expelled from the garden with Adam and Eve. 'Helel Ben Shacar', translated as 'Lucifer' in the bible means Son of the Morning or morning star. Also the fall of Lucifer is talked about that he wanted to be above all in the north. 4,500 years ago the north star was not Polaris, but the star Thuban, which is in the constellation Draco (the dragon). the star is also call 'alpha draconis'. So here we also have some words to tie together, the Shinning one, serpent, dragon, and Son of the morning, or mourning star. We see that it would be cast down, and not that star has been cast down with Pelorus taking the possession of pole star, but it has deeper meanings than this. The constellation Hercules is seen also spinning on the north star. He is seen with his foot on the serpents head, thus crushing the head of the serpent, when Draco is on top The Serpent is now bruising the heel of the seed of the woman. Where as helel wished to set himself over all that is called god, he is now Devel, meaning 'little god'. In Job we read about the sons of God again, and with them came Satan or Shatan, Shatan meaning the adversary, but this is a title not an accusation. To understand this we must also know Psalms 82 and the Divine Council of Elohim and the sons of God. Where God has a Council or holds a court where the Sons of God come to set in Council. In this account in Job we read the accuser or adversary comes with the sons of God. But a better modern day translation of this would be: and along with the sons of God came the Prosecutor. He is seen here as an accuser of men. But else where in the bible he is also an accuser of angels. By the new testament Satan is now the enemy of God and man, and is evil incarnated. Some say he was an angel, but by the descriptions already given he was much more than an angel as he set in the council of God and is called a morning star. Some will also suggest that the phrase sons of God refer to Israel, but it is obvious this is not the case as we read in Job that the Sons of God AND the Morning Stars were PRESENT WHEN GOD Created the Heavens and the Earth. So Satan, The DEVEL, The Serpent and Dragon are all speaking of the same person, a SON of GOD. and is represented as the constellation Draco. Some suggest that the planet Venus is the morning star, it is true that the Greeks and Romans called this star Lucifer and Phosphorous, translated as "Light Bearer" or Bringer of Light. but these are a poor translation of the Hebrew and Venus does not ascend to the highest parts of the North. so it can not be the representation of Satan the Dragon. the only one that fits IS Draco the dragon for ever battling in the north which at one time the star alpha draconis was the highest star, the north star but was brought low.

Hello NefariousFox, Well I think things like devil exist in the mind of the people. I don't believe in the devil being a huge ugly guy. But the form of devil can be seen in the human beings themselves. I don't believe in the supernaturally powerful devil which you are asking if I believe or not. The one who is very very bad is the devil... happy mylotting...

SilverCryst, I never knew this so-called devil could ever make one speak such profound truth! Or is it that the devil has possessed me too? He's really powerful then and more worthy of worship than the God! Nzalheart, did you get the news? We're sailing in the same boat!

Silver, I would like you to indulge me by doing a mental exercise. I want you to imagine, what would be true if Satan didn't exist. I'm not asking you to pretend anything, or believe anything, or even really consider anything. I just want you to say to yourself, "If Satan didn't exist then..." and take it as far as you want. And remember, as long as you stick to your beliefs, with Jesus' love at your side, doing this little exercise won't be a threat to your beliefs, right? Please just humor me. Take some time to just finish the above phrase a few times, and when it's over, you'll be right back where you started.

The existence of people who do things that the Bible says they should not do is hardly evidence for the existence of Satan. More likely, evidence for the fact that the mind produces desires which some people do not examine enough to keep them from taking over their mind. The temptations that you're so sure come from Satan are a part of the way humans are socialized and the way the human mind is designed.

I am not an atheist. I don't believe in the Devil. I think the devil was made to scare people or to make up an excuse for their actions. Some people blame the devil for their actions when in fact they are the ones to blame. To me Satan is nothing, is just a character made up by many religions.
