How to earn money from offering free softwares?

Nowadays, there are many free softwares to download from the internet. Does the provider really want to provide free softwares, or can he/she earn money from some special way even offering free download and giving away license charges?
The way I can imagine is that the providers earn money from the advertisements put on their download web pages. But I still find many providers don't put any advertisement on their websites. Can you imagine some ways of earning money by providing free softwares? Or do you think they are really providing it free and don't want to earn money from their software?

I'll site to you my free Avast antivirus and what I've read in their blog. They have offered the Home Basic free ever since the time I could remember. It's an excellent reliable at par with commercially available antivirus and what do you think have they gain - a reputable name in the industry. They are also offering enhanced version of their that famous antivirus and other security tools for specific systems which are of course the pay versions. If their clients are happy with their free version then they would not look no further. That is how they profit by offering free product.
There are others with such noble cause offer software completely free. From OS to a wide range of applications such as open source software and of course others who exploit the free system such as malwares.
