No wonder I love my pets! Some people make me sick! I guess the police are wachting for dog and rouster (can't use the real word) fighting so now they try something else. Any comments? Police seize 150 bird, arrest 19 people in alleged finch-fighting ring in Connecticut NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The birds have long been popular for their brilliant colors and beautiful songs, but Connecticut authorities say hundreds of saffron finches and canaries drew a crowd betting on a brawl. Police arrested 19 people from Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Jersey and seized 150 birds in a house raid on an alleged bird-fighting operation. Most of the birds were saffron finches, which are small birds native to South America, and a few were canaries, officials said. Police said they made the arrests Sunday just as spectators had placed bets and were getting ready to watch the birds fight at a home in Shelton, just west of New Haven. Authorities say they seized $8,000 in alleged betting money. Authorities often deal with rouster fighting, but police and animal experts said they had not heard of fighting involving finches and canaries before. The 19 people, all originally from Brazil, were charged with cruelty to animals and gambling. Police also charged the homeowner, 42-year-old Jurames Goulart, with interfering with officers. Goulart denied the charges, saying he had the birds for singing But his wife, Maria, told a different story. She told the AP her husband, a landscaper, and others trained the birds to fight and gave them some type of food, either protein or sugar, that made them more hyper. The birds would fight for some 15 minutes, pecking each other in the legs, head and eyes, according to Maria Goulart. She said the fights have been going on for years around the region. “I got very upset when I see they started bleeding,” she said. “I think he has to pay for his action.”

Hi Heather.I have never seen a bird fight before, except for two rousters that pecked their way to bleeding each other,in an old movie.I had really shuddered at the sight. It is one of the most merciless acts and completely inhuman.Iam vehemently against it and I think those who encourage such activities are savages in a human form.In my country, old kings used to arrange bird fights,to satisfy, their whims. I perceive the birds to be the most adorable creatures, made to be loved and cared.Have a great day.

This made me sick too!! What kind of pepople take pleasure from watching animals fight? I don't understand it, I never have understood it, and I never will understand it. It's just sick. I hope these idiots get what's coming to them, for their sick and illegal actions. Thanks for making us all aware.

I can't believe how sick some ppl are. I think if the punishment were harsher ppl would stop doing things like this. I don't know where ppl come from that have no regard for animals but I don't think they should be allowed anywhere near an animal for the rest of their life. I did a discussion about this when I first heard about it four days ago...I'm against as you know any kind of animal abuse and to my mind this is sinking really low to involve beautiful and very small innocent canaries and finches...too bad they didn't round up the men responsible, place them in a room, and let crows loose at them to peck out their eyes

Sorry I must have missed it although I do not think it hurts to let users know or remind them about this latest cruel "sport". Like me they may have missed your discussion.

I am in total agreement with your punishment for the people. I think that for every form of animal cruelty the perpetrator should have to suffer in the exact same way as their victims!
