We all love the scent of the usual things: flowers, good food, rain, etc. But I also love the smell of books, crayons, pencils, play doh, and the newspaper. Not that I would really eat them, of course lol. Are there any every-day or unusual things which smell good to you? Do share :) Karen

LOL what a funny yet very intersting topic to discuss! My favorite smells that are "good enough to eat" include fresh Christmas trees, lilacs, summer rain in the morning, woodsy areas, and don't laugh-a box of old photos (I mean old-like put up in a closet for the last 30 years.) The smell of photos I remembering smelling for the first time when I was a kid when my father pulled down a box of pictures to show my sister and I of his early adulthood in the 60's. I also love the smell of OFF bugspray....haha.

Along with the smell of old photos, my dad's high school yearbooks smelled the same, and I loved it! LOL The OFF bugspray triggers great childhood memories of going to summer camp, and I just dig those memories brought on by the stuff!

Ooooh, I love all of the things you've mentioned. I had so many lilacs, but since I now live in an apartment, there are none here. I miss the smell of them each spring. And you're right, old photos DO have their own unique smell. I don't, however, like the smell of Off! LOL I have asthma and strong scents can trigger an "attack." Have a beautiful day filled with good smelling things Karen

You're right...many scents DO trigger wonderful memories of childhood. Great to make those associations!

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, Well, one may like the smells as I too like of saw-dust or after petrol bus has started, but some people , ladies in particular eat lime, cowdung or even dry-leaves, this is harmful. I wish to have some more similar views from the following : http://www.theideabox.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8624 "Unusual smells What smells do you like that aren't what one would usually think of pleasurable? (I'm not talking about food, flowers, or perfumes) For some strange reason I like the smell of sawdust, the boat motor just after it starts, the furnace when it starts up for the first time each season, the smell of applying paint with a power spray painter. Am I the only strange one here?? Wouldn't it be nice if every time we messed up our life we could press CTRL ALT DEL and start all over??" May God bless You and have a great time.

Dear friend, what an interesting site that link led me to. I also like the smells of sawdust and gasoline, but not of epoxy glues or spray paint! Those are very strong. I have heard that when a woman, sometimes especially a pregnant woman, craves or eats things like lime, soap, or dirt, etc., that it means her body is lacking in a necessary nutrient! But oh my, how terrible those things must taste! Thank you for such an excellent response. Karen

The smell of a new book is something I've always liked! Certain wood's smell pretty good too. I know what I DON'T like though; and that's the smell of a new car! Many people seem to like it, but the plasticky smell makes me want to gag.

Hello James...yes, many woods have a very pleasant scent, but cars? I was amazed to learn they even have a spray that makes a used car have that "new car scent." Would love to know what the heck goes into that spray! LOL Karen

I've seen that spray before too actually! I've never been game to smell it, so have no idea what's in it either. It sounds horrible to me!

Yes it does, and whatever is in it that makes it smell "plasticky" like a new car cannot be exactly good for one. Ack!

Hi Karen! I also love fragrance of flowers, sweet smell of earth soil after rain, smell of hair after shampoo, smell of onions and tomatoes, when they are fried for vegetables. It is smell of riped Mangoes, which fascinate me most.

Ooo, I also love the smell of fresh flowers, Deepak, or freshly picked veggies and fruits. A tomato, still warm from the sun when freshly picked, has a special smell that I love. And damp earth...I also love that one. I have heard that taste and scent are closely related, and that if we lose our sense of smell, food seldom has much taste! Ack! So I hope that never happens lol. Karen

You are right Karen, we should not lose our sense of capacity to smell, else we cannot enjoy our food or anything else.

True, Deepak. Wouldn't it be awful not to be able to taste all the different delicious things we love to eat??

LOL Pat...nope. You're not the only one. There are at least two or three of us that love the smell of ALL those things. I once had a boyfriend who said he loved the smell of manure. Now I hadn't heard that one before and I haven't heard it since lol. But I bet he isn't the only one. Karen

LOL, Jaxsky. I believe many of us have tasted play doh or paste, especially as children. I remember the neighbors driveway being near my bedroom window when I was a kid, and I loved the smell of the petrol each time they started their car. Thanks for sharing your "sniff" preferences lol. Karen

I used to sniff magic markers as a kid. And I love the smell of horses. (must be cuz I live in Iowa, and it's just a familiar scent?)

Hi Lybra. It seems to me many of the scents we love are developed in our childhood, as with you and the magic markers, or also develop from our homelands. Horses do have their own unique scent. We have many horse farms where I live :) Karen

I really enjoy the smell of flowers. They really brighten up my mood. Never cared much for the smell of rain though. Funny you mention about the books. I like being in the library and noticing the scent of new or used books. It's kind of nostalgic.

Hello Shar. Yes, flowers, especially lilacs for me, smell wonderful. Like you, I enjoy the smell unique to a library. Perhaps that is also why I enjoy the scent of individual books...brings back fond memories of school days and first learning the pleasures of reading. Karen

I also loved the smell of gasoline, but I think, back in the day when I was a child, Sharpies had not yet been "invented." OOoo, you're right, some of the fruity shampoos...like citrus, DO smell good enough to sip. But then, one would "burp" bubbles, yes? I actually saw my brother do that once when he was a child and had tried a bite of Ivory soap..LOL. Have a blessed day. Karen
