Why do we explain to everyone what we spilled on our shirt?

You're at work eating your lunch when that darn piece of bow tie pasta nicely covered in spaghetti sauce decides to jump off your fork & sit on your shirt. You remove the intruder immediately, but of course, he leaves behind a spot. You wipe at it, usually just making it worse. So for the rest of the work day you going around telling people, "I had spaghetti for lunch" & point at the spot. Why do we do this?

Unfortunately I get clumsy when I eat so I get stains on my shirts quite often compared to other people I eat with. I think we tell everyone what happened and how the stain got there because we are self conscious and don't want to give other people time to assume something negative like she never washes her clothes or she's a messy eater, she haven't changed her clothes for days, etc. I recently bought a Tide pen which suppose to clean the small stains and hope it works. I personally don't say much about my stains unless somebody is like staring real hard at it which will make me a little uncomfortable and tell them what I ate and how clumsy I am.

I think we do stuff like this in order to answer embarassing questions before people ask. My thing is that I wear a lot of dark colours, so I can slop all over myself (as long as I'm not eating Turkish Delight, or a sugar donut) and no one will be the wiser. LOL If you're going to slop on yourself, wear more black! LOL I need to teach my husband this method. I swear, the old guy needs a bib, some days!!

So someone doesn't think it's a stain that has been on there for 3 months.........hey, that's an idea for the future when I want to wear that top that DOES have that stain on it......."I dropped my lunch on it"!! Probably, because people's eyes go straight there as they look at you, if they aren't already on your chest!! (oh, they are NEVER on my chest, since it's difficult to find, but you know what I mean) In my family, we always say that it's hereditary to drop your food on your shirt.......mostly on your chest!

I think only insecure people do this, or people that are afraid to leave a bad impression. I think it is because some people are afraid that others are going to secretly think they are slobs, though they probably won't, and they probably won't even mention it. They have to bring it up first to ease their own mind, and to offer an explanation before anyone can have such thoughts. People that do this are probably of the same type that would think others are slobs if they saw food spots on their clothing. So what goes through their mind is "Gee, I must really look like a sloppy person, better make sure they know I'm not."
