what does the numbermean in the paranthesis mean ?

The number in brackets represents the number of discussions you've responded so far. If you've seen it go down, it must mean one (or some) of the discussions you've responded have been removed by the administrators for violating the site's guidelines. Once the discussion is deleted your response is also gone and the number between brackets decreases.
