I am taking a course on Software Engineering and my professor emphasizes a lot on UML diagrams. When I searched the net I found that UML diagrams are not that necessary, in fact a lot of people think its simply a waste of time. What you guys think? If you think necessary then which tool you use to draw UML tools?( Download links will be highly appreciated )

Well it is not necessary when you are doing small projects or making project just for your college or school. but it is important when you are planning for big project.. when your team members will be changed they can come to know just by viewing UML diagrams and also useful for future, when you are told to make same kind of project which you had made in past.. you can just re-construct it by viewing the diagrams only.. I use Microsoft Visio mostly to draw the UML.
