Does it cost more to raise children today than it did a generation ago?

With the normal amount of inflation factored in, does raising children cost more in today's world than it did 30 years or so? If so, what might you attribute to the higher costs for their needs and wants?

I think that it probably does cost more to raise a child today but mainly because of inflation and the many changes that a society has gone through today. Mostly technology has added to the cost. What parent hasn't heard a child demand a blackberry or their own cell phone?
