Is it french fries really originated from France? Is it a popular dish in France now? I heard MacDonals discovered it...?

It was certainly a long time before Mcdonald's They were around when I was a child but Mcdonald's were not even a blot on the horizon.
It seems they originated in Belgium:

Wherever it was, a BIG thankyou to whoever invented them!

I have no idea but i would assume its got something to do with France somewhere along the line for them to be called french fries. Wonder if anyone knows the answer?
