Can you freeze shredded cheese?

We bought a bunch of cheese blocks, and it seems like cheese doesn't shred to well after you defrost it. If we were to shred the cheese before we froze it, would it still come out the same...such as if we had bought already shredded cheese?

My roommates and I used to buy like ten pounds of shredded cheese and put it in the quart sized zipper bags and put it in the freezer in those. It was like $5 to buy a pound at the grocery store and $12 or $15 for the gigantic ten pound bag at Sam's Club so it was insanely cheaper to get it that way. You just have to think ahead and get out a new bag in time for it to thaw because you can't defrost it in the microwave
