Hi, I am very stress now. At my country Malaysia we are using our own language in teaching all our subjects while in primary school. But after we go in Uni all subjects change into English. I really cant understand what lecturer are trying to explain to me. Some lecturers still using the same language but the questions all in English. I sat here for 3 hours already and i still cant even start a question. My English not very worst but with all those business words i really cant understand it. How can i overcome this problems? I also found out not only me facing this problems. All my friends are the same. They just called me and complaint about this thing. Can anyone help us?

Yes, English can be a major factor in almost everything after your high school life. I'm from Malaysia as well so I thoroughly understand how you feel. Sometimes watching television helps especially in capturing the communication skills as well as gaining vocabulary knowledge. Reading magazines and newspaper helps too, try to find categories that interest you so you won't get dizzy.

There are many ways to improve your level of English. Join an English course, read a book, learn a new word a day, watch an English film and many more. Your eagerness and motivation to learn is the best key to improve your English. If you are not motivated to learn you will become frustrated and give up.

Hi, i agree with what you said. I already start to read English books and listen to English songs. The only thing i did not do yet is speak with friends in English. We already get used to speak in mandarin so it will be a bit tough for us to speak in English. Thanks a lot!!!

I think practice makes perfect and your eagerness to learn is important. I think your teacher what you to practice your English and prepare you to speak English confidently. You should look it as a challenge and motivation to improve your English. When I was studying it is my fear to speak English whenever our Teacher asking us in English we should answer in English also. Sometimes it is very hard for me to express myself because my English is very poor.

This is a common problem in all those areas where English was used extensively in the colonial days…our countries just cant seem to decide whether they want to continue with English or start using the mother tongue as the sole business language. India is no exception…we have all government and legal and business papers in English…at the same time the vernacular language is given much importance in the school level. As a result, children from the vernacular medium schools suffer a lot in future prospects. We have these spoken English classes and study centres all over who train such children to understand and write English better…maybe you too can see if you find similar training centres in your place. Or else the net has wonderful English training sites but they start from very preliminary stages and might not be very helpful to you at the university level.

It's bad, but I think you can study by yourself. I dont know how does education system work in Mala, but usually tertiary education system needs students to study a lot after the class. For example, the uni I studied in australia, it needs 2 hours study time for each credit point, for a 6 cp subject, there would be 2 hours lecture, so the other 4 hours you should study at home or in library. For me, I didnt attend lectures, but I studied by myself at home. I is quite enough. Lecturers teach by speaking, we can study by reading books. I read about 5 or more books for every subject in my first semester just tried not to fail. Trust yourself, and it would be difficult at first, but you will be all right onece you get used to it. Good luck.

Hi, i see. Thanks for your sharing. But at our country we must attend the lecturers cause it takes our attendance and we must attend at least 80% to have final exam. If not we will fail straight away. So we are very pack and dont really have extra time to study. Our assignment like mountain too. It is really tough!!! Thanks ya!!! Happy Myloting!!!

Hi lchiat, I also face the same problem with you before. It is hard to understand what other people said especially if they are from South Asia. I can't understand a single word pronounce by my lecture from Bangladesh before. It is easier if the lecture is from your own country. The best way you can do is try to communicate with others using English. This is very important for your speech. There is no other way to improve it without using it. If your are shy about your proficiency, try it with your friends first or someone who you are known to. For writing and vocabulary purpose, dictionary is a must. There is a lot of good dictionary you can use. If you are looking for English to English translation, you can use Oxford dictionary. But if you are looking for English-BM or vise verse translation, DBP dictionary is the best. Good luck and have a nice day.

Hi, thanks a lot for your sharing. Our lecturers are from local but they are educated overseas s their slang will be a bit different and the words they use a bit hard for us to understand. I keep on using my handphone to search fr the meaning. I will try to talk more by using English with my friends there. Thanks a lot for your help. Happy Myloting!!!

Maybe visit England or America and attend a language course. Look around for a cheap one as some are very expensive. If you're uni uses American Engligh then it's better to go to America - ask at uni what they use.
