My pickle relish, I need help

I hand chopped with a hand grater my cucumbers and added it to my bread and butter spices and vinegar/water and 7 cups of sugar. I brought it to a boil and put it in my pint jars and when I opened one so excited to taste it. It was sour! Not ruined sour but sour taste like my mama's green tomato ketchup. IT is funny but I have lots of cucumbers and would like to put up some sweet pickle relish. What did I do wrong or do you have a better and easier way to put it up?Thanks and God bless you for your help.

U didn't say how much vinegar u used. I can only think u needed to add more sugar than u did. U could act sugar as u open each jar. wouldn't hurt anything i wouldn't think.
