The Smurfs: Why so few females?

I'm sure this has been discussed numerous times. Smurfs are fictional so you can just make up your own theories. My theory is that only male smurfs that wear colored clothes can mate. For example, Papa Smurf can mate because he wears a red cap. Grandpa Smurf is the highest ranking smurf and wears a gold cap. The gold cap means he's retired and no longer mates. All female smurfs can mate and there is no ranking system. Do you have a smurfy theory?

I only remember them introducing one female smurf early on in the cartoon and that was Smurfette, who I think if I remember correctly, was created by Gargamel as one of his scemes to get the smurfs. But obviously failed as she ended up becoming a good guy and making a life with the smufs. Later they added an elderly female smurf and a younger female smuf with red braids/pigtails and wore pink suspenders. As to why there really are no female smurfs, maybe the females live in their own village, and only have a select few males living with them. Maybe the two sexs' can't live well together for long periods of time. Lol I don't really know why. :D :))

I thought that was kind of strange too. Later on the lady smurf did get a baby smurf. But who the father was I don't know. I forgot her name. It has been a long time ago, since I have seen them. The smurfs were created by Father Abraham in the Netherlands.
