Stories and books of our youth

Hello all. I remember loving to read or be read to in my young years, and I always did the same when my children were young: read to them and make all kinds of books available to them as they grew. I remember fairy tales, fantasies, rhymes, and downright scary tales from my childhood! Some of the series I read as I learned how: Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, The Little House On The Prairie series...etc. What are some of your favorite types of stories and books from your own youth?

when i and my siblings were very little we were addicted to the narnia set. i think it was the only reason that i learnt to read. i also liked things that i can't read now because of the cringe factor (famous five etc).

Hi Jb. Ooo, I love the Chronicles of Narnia. The author has an amazing imagination, which I really admire, since I love to write. Thanks for sharing a bit of your youth :) Karen

Hi Kitty. I have read the Little House books, own every single one. They are a treat for kids and adults alike. I bought a set for each of my daughters when they were young. They still have those books and have read them to their own children now. What a great thing to pass on. Someday, I would love to write and illustrate some children's books. Some of them are so intriguing and unique. Yes, the Nancy Drew books were great. I hope you come across the book you're seeking one of these days. Karen

Good morning, Kitty. I hope you DO find the book. You may come across it out of the blue someday while searching for something else. That happens to me quite often. I am also a huge fan of anything Little House!

Hi Karen! When we were young, we would also love to read all types of fairy tales, fantasies, ghost stories and comics. It was a great fun reading those books/magazines. I also encourage my kids to read magazines and books and tell them that there is no better mental exercise than 'reading'. Deepak

Hi Karen! Yes, you are right, it (reading) is food for one's mind and there is no substitute for a hobby like 'reading'.

I think it is wonderful that you encourage your children to read. It is great food for the mind and the spirit. It is one of the ways we keep learning for our entire lifetime! Karen

Absolutely no substitute. The human mind and imagination amaze me each time I read a wonderfully written novel!

Oh yes, I loved her. I anxiously awaited each new one to show up in the library, and when I began earning money baby-sitting, I was ecstatic to be able to buy my own and read them over and over. Karen

My mom used to read all the time, but never to me as a child. But she did instill in me the desire to read! In forth grade I had to do my first book report, I did it on a book called the boxcar children! It was a series of stories. I got older and remember a book called Street Rod, it was great being from Detroit, we were all in to cars, it was about teens making roadsters out of junk cars! Awesome for a teen boy! LOL! tdemex

Actually, I like reading very much when I was a child. I read Chinese, so the series I'm going to list are probably not very familiar for you, but they really means a lot to me. There is a series named Pipilu and Lusisi, tell a story about a twin brother and a town sister and their fanciful adventure. And another series I liked is Shuke & Beta, its about two cute little mouse, one of them is drives a toy tank, and the other one drives a toy helicopter. When I grow older and learn to read English, I started looking for foreign interesting storys. Then I found the Xanth series, which is wrote by Piers Anthony. The storys make me feel so excited, that I hardly stop reading every time. Now, I addicted to Harry Potter Series and Twilight series very much. Both of them are great works.

Hello Jin. Your Chinese books sound delightful, actually. I wish I knew foreign languages, but since I do not at the moment, it is good that we have translations of many of the books now. The Harry Potter series and the Twilight series are also very popular here, as are the Chronicles of Narnia. Keep on enjoying your reading :) Karen

Hello Jinse. I am sorry for not noticing and responding to your comment here much sooner. I do think you would enjoy the movies, though :) Let us know if/when you watch them what you thought of them. Have a beautiful day. Karen

Yes, you're right. Translations do help a lot, since one person can never be able to learn all the languages in the world. As for me, if there is an origenal version or a Chinese version in front of me, I would prefer the origenal one. I think there are some feelings and styles can never be translated. And you mentioned the Chronicles of Narnia, which is famors but I had only watch a movie about it. I thought the movie is wonderful after watching, and now I have a stronger desire to read these books. Thank you for you advice.

I remember attempting to read the Goosebump series with my brother and I would get so scared by them lol. I ended up reading the babysitters club, boxcar children...that kind of thing. When I was much younger it was all about Dr. Seuss. Now my reading habits evolved to like James Patterson and romance novels.

So the Goosebump series gave you goosebumps, literally? That is cute, but for some reason, we enjoy it being a bit scared that way when we're young. I think it makes us feeler braver for having gotten through the scare lol. Seuss is great, and so is a really good romance. Karen

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, Well, I find even same thing going on all around. Remember your mother and my mother, taking us in their laps and indicating towards sky, introducing to moon and stars. Even today same thing is going around. If children weep, they will be warned about something, by which the will keep quiet. Even today, i listen 'Baba, baba black sheep, have any wool, as Sir , yes Sir, two bags full and so on. But one thing, even today, we jhave kept reading same type of social and detective novels. We read them. Why to leave child time habits. I am always tempted. May God bless You and have a great time.

Hello my friend PeacefulWmn9 Ji, I wish to go ahead another step out and simulate conditions of child hood, peep into all the lanes and by-lanes of those memories. Whenever I get a chance of meeting anybody, I try and meet, whenever I get a chance to visit those places, I do not leave them. I would bring-out an living example, In my place there is a forest after the name of English man, named as "Allen Forest". I remember some five / six yrs back, one pld grand lady visited that forest along with her great children, who was a child and daughter of that Mr Allen. She showed all the places to her grand children. It happened after 53 yrs of gap. I was very much moved by her noble idea. Why to leave child-hood at all. Let's retain in our memory. May God bless You and have a great time.

Hello my friend. You are right. We do not have to leave our childhood, but we carry it within us wherever we go and however old we become, just as we do each stage of our lives. The memories stay with us always, sometimes appearing to hide or disappear, but in reality, they only await the time we will recall them, to ponder or to share with another.

Hello :) You are right, there is no reason to leave all of the things we loved as a child. As adults, we can enjoy and share them all over again, first with our children, and then with our grandchildren. I, too, remember baa baa black sheep :) A wonderful nursery rhyme. Have a great day. Karen

Hello Leiah. Many children have loved those books! I have read them to my grandchildren, to this day. I wish I could remember the name of the one you're referring to, but it slips my own mind, also. Thank you for reminding me of these special books. Karen

Thanks for taking down memory lane PeacefulWmn9. I loved Nancy Drew books. I also enjoyed anything by Agatha Christie. I will always remember the Christmas I received The Lennon Sisters book. I think there was only one adventure in this series.

Hi Ptty...weren't they great mystery stories? I always looked forward to finding each new book as it became available at the library, and was always ecstatic if I got one to own at Christmas time! Yes, I think The Lennon Sisters was a single book about their lives. I remember seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show, which my parents watched each Sunday night! Karen

Wow Karen, with the mention of the Ed Sullivan show you have taken me down yet another wonderful path in my mind. Every Sunday night, after a wonderful dinner, we sat down at 8 pm and watched this wonderful show. I have remembered another book that was a favortie of mine in my youth. Nathaniel Hawthorne's book House of the Seven Gables. It was a brooding, gothic classic.
