First Day in College

Well, I should go to sleep now as I need to prepare my first day in college the next 6 hours, but I can't sleep! I feel really nervous. Some people say college-life is different from high school life and I wonder what's the different? It's like tradition in my country, junior student will be given certain task from senior for 3 days (usually not useful task, like make miniature chicken from matches, take a photo with skoteng seller [skoteng is some kind or drink made from ginger and only sold at mid night], ask for senior signature ;and they will ask us to sing or dance first before give their signature!) and new students need to wear certain dresscode. Most of the case, the dresscode is the embarrassing one (when it's my first day in high school, they stated a rule to wear different color socks, wear eyeglasses from green paper, carry a big name tag, etc). It's like a hell for new student. There are some death case in certain school, so now it's not as bad as in the past, but still, the seniors will give me and all new students certain task! I'm afraid it's not useful and tiring task again How about you? Is there any culture like this in your country? And how was your first day in college? Is it embarrassing or a nice experience? first day of college?was not exciting..i dont even like to go to college..cause im scared..i felt im not welcome and i find it uncomfortable seeing other people with diffirent attitudes..makes me feel tired..since nursey until high school i remain loyal to my school it was private were i had only 10 or 15 students..i feel secured and comfortable ..but college is different i was not used to that kind of enviroment that is messy and crowed.. in college i take up nursing..it was not my choice of course..the first day just tires me..i need to find my room..the building was to wide and big..when i reached in my class i felt so tired and i was even sweating!the room was so hot!and crowed...make me feel no interest in going to college..but fortunately i was used to it..but not used to have different classmates every subject! good for me i was married earlier..stress free...nursing makes me ugly.too much pressure and i hate it..

Hi acie Sorry for the late comment because of this task matter! So you're from nursing college.. Well, that's exactly as you said, the building too big and I found difficulties too in making best friend there. Too crowded and too many people! Guess I need to adapt with that situation and make friend with everyone,,tiring, yes, but I've already entered it and no way to go back. No regret and I will try my best Well, nice to hear that you found married earlier can save you,, seems like you have a happy married-life for me. I think nursing is cool, yeah at least you can do first aid if your husband or other people injured..

Actually most of us feel nervous for first day at college. But it is not something very new.In some parts of world, students really feel nervous due to ragging and all. But its a new stage of life.

Hi subha12 Of course, most of people will feel nervous when it comes to their "first" things or experience. You're right, it's something new and it's better if we just enjoy it. It will give us experience and it can make us enter new stage in life. But what I don't like is the bullying or very tiring orientation period in my country. Thanks God, my orientation is not like that, but there are some college that still use that kind of orientation. How about orientation week in your country?

Well, I have just arrived home from my college now and I enjoy many things too.. but still, they give me many tasks to do, but it's better and not a bullying and tiring one. Is there any certain culture in your country in the first day entering college?

I think i can understand your situation. It's Indonesian culture right? LOL. I wish i can be there and see how is the 'plonco' going on LOL. But it's good for adaptation. I wish you all the best and you can pass it with good. Although it's useless, but however it's a one time chance in a life. So don't miss it. Have a nice day and happy mylotting.

Hi dianmelydia Ah, we are from the same country, no wonder you know the word "plonco",,LOL,, No, it's not a funny things to be seen. I know it's only once in my lifetime, sure I will remember it..but I don't think that kind of orientation period is useful. For me, better to do art exhibition, visit elderly and orphanage or do work-team task and games..also seminar about the campus, study, etc..but not strange task like "take a photo with policeman in the waterfall in middle of the town while hugging chicken" What's the point? like crazy people.. Yes, I hope I can do it and that my college orientation period is the modern one, not old bullying one

Hi ChrysanTflower, Usually the new student will have to attend orientation week before the new semester started here. This orientation week is to familiarize the new student to the campus/college life and it is conducted by the seniors. Before this, there is a lot of ragging (bullying) cases and in some cases a new student being injured or sick because of this. Some senior take advantage to bullying the new student and ask them to do something stupid. Some senior will also ask the new student to do the a lot of favor during this week. But this kind of orientation have been banned and more friendly kind of activities have been introduced. The college/campus administration also take part in this orientation to make sure there are no more ragging cases happen.During this week, there are some senior who will lead and give some advices about everything in college/campus. And this is good for the new student because the can learn or make some experiment of student life in college. I hope you can have a nice experience during those time and enjoy your college life more. Good luck and have a nice day.

Well in my country things are a bit different. You only go to "high school" if you pass a kind of IQ test when you are 11. If you don't you go to a regular secondary school although you can go to one anyway if you don't want to go to high school/grammar school. Then when you are 16 you can either stay on at school or leave and go to work or college. College for most people is only 2 years although it can be as long as you want really. Then after college you can either go to work or go to university. For me the big difference was from going from school to college. There has been no real difference for me between college and university. I am doing the same thing, with the same sort of people and everything. But at school everything was so much different. At college you can just be yourself and no one really cares if you are walking around by yourself or whatever, but at school you had to fit in or you would be bullied.

Hi pinklemonade Waw! What a nice and useful info about education in your country! In my country we don't need to do IQ test, but that test will be arranged AFTER the new students receive first report, just to know whether he/she has used his/her maximum ability in study or not. So, college only 2 years? That's a short time. In my country, the standard is 4 years, but it can be longer or shorter too depend on what program and degree do you want. What's the different between college and university? I think they are the same..or different? If that's the difference, it will be a nice things, I can be myself without worried what other people think about me. Why it's more free in college? You're right, there's bullied in school and I hate that. So, you say that college free of bully things?
