What is your favourite form of procrastination?

August 27, 2009 8:42am CST
Anyone can do any amount of work, provided it isn't the work he is supposed to be doing at that moment.... Well my lotters, as I sit here typing I am yet again procrastinating and avoiding the school work I need to do (I am a teacher…) I find that procrastination is the “mother of invention”, I can always find a million and one things I would rather be doing than the task that I am avoiding! Having stumbled on mylot, my procrastination has become even more effective… I read discussions, I post on them, I read the replies, I post again… and so on… My question is: What is your favourite form of procrastination, and what tasks are you avoiding?

Hello, Misty. I'm a procrastinator, too. Mylot is now my favourite form of procrastination, simply because I can justify by saying, 'Well, it may be procrastination, but it's procrastination I get paid for, so it's not all bad!' Other things I do to procrastinate is play online Mahjongg or do Sudoku puzzles. Not ordinary sudokus, though, it has to be 5 grid Samurai Sudokus for me. What tasks am I avoiding? Well, I don't work for a living, being medically retired, but I'm always happy to put off household tasks with a little procrastination!

I do not procrastinate, drives me nuts when people do that, sorry. I have a son that procrastinates enough for every one in the family. I think it is a very bad habit to get into. If u have something that needs doing, do it & put it behind u is the way i like to do.

I guess it is worse if you don't realise you are procrastinating... What I do is set myself goals, say at the end of marking 20 student assignments I will reward myself with 30mins online... That way I get the work done and get to feel like I have had some time for myself doing something I want to do to. I am a very hard worker, and when I am in work that is all I do - I am not online, so I kinda feel justified to use some of my vacation to procrastinate! Have you tried the "rewards" carrot and stick approach with your son?

Hi Misty! Ha! ha! ha! ha!! Interesting! I think surfing internet and specially working on mylot could be one of my favourirte reasons for procrastinating my other tasks, the other could be I go to sleep on weekends and sometimes postpone some of the tasks. I tend to get so engrossed and busy on mylot that I forget my other important tasks, sometimes. Sometimes, I postpone my lunch or dinner to finish a discussion and sometimes I avoid going to market, when I am at home and mylotting, I feel that let me finish the discussions on mylot, when done with, then I'll go to market. I know it could be hazardous to ignore important tasks, but sometimes our heart rules over our head.........LOL!

Yes, you are right sometimes procrastination gives us more enjoyment than finishing some tasks...........LOL!

I understand... I often get "into" a discussion and I have to rad the responses and do my replies before I can do anything else.... I have to get lots done today as I am back at work tomorrow - so I am limiting my mylotting time until the work is done... A quick check of my discussions - repsond and log off! Procrastination is such a useful pastime... why does life have to go and get in the way?

Hahaha, my boyfriend would love to just throw all my yarn into trash bags and place them somewhere...I have so much yarn it's unreal. But I agree, cleaning is a never ending cycle as soon as you finish cleaning one room there's another room already a mess.
27 Aug 09
I get the feeling that we all avoid the cleaning - is it just me or is it one of the dullest things to do? I mean I clean the house and the dishes and well just clean, then my partner comes home and he messes it all up again - when I get upset he just tells me that I do nothing because of all the mess! Yes you jacka$$ YOU just made it all! It makes me so mad! I do see cleaning as a waste of time - but I think I am going to collect all his junk and put it in trash sacks in his study! HA!

I am always here. I was here yesterday, I'm here again today and I'll be here again tomorrow I have no doubt. While I'm here the pile of ironing is still mounting up It is too easy to put everything in the washing machine and then hang it to dry - but why don't they invent something that will iron it to!!??

I haven't taken the "plunge" yet - I get so frustrated by my fiancee that I am concerned that if I do things will only get worse... He has a mum that stayed at home and did everything for him, his dad and his sisters - this is what he seems to expect... yet I hold down a full time job and always leave before he does, often getting home after him... yet does he ever cook a meal? do the dishes? clean up??? A resounding NO!
27 Aug 09
LOL... I HATE ironing... thankfully my fiancee enjoys it and he has the shirts that need ironing... I buy clothes that contain lycra on purpose! In terms of avoiding the ironing I find that hanging the items in the bathroom when I am having a shower helps as the steam seems to reduce the creases.... You might find this article funny it is something I wrote about the more amusing aspects of certain "expectations" my partner had... but no longer has! it was disabused of them over time... http://purpleslinky.com/offbeat/with-this-ring-i-thee-wed-marriage-an-alternative-viewpoint/

I know what you mean about the just reply to the ones that interest you... and then more crop up... and a few more... and so on! I think we are all just a lot busier than people used to be there is so much more pressure on people now to have things done by the deadline - which was yesterday! I always have a zillion and one things I need to do, which is why I now write things down and cross them off the list as they are completed - it is the only way I keep track!

My task is studying and my favorite form of procrastination is preparing to study. I would get home after school and say I would study after I had some computer time and eat my lunch. Then I would say I would study after I have a little nap and few well rested. When I wake up, I would get again so I could wake up and focus on studying. I pretty much find a bunch of stuff to do to prepare myself for a study session that usually doesn't happen.

LOL - you so remind me of myself!... That's what I do, I have to have everything I need to do my work, it all has to be laid out just so... I have to have the right pens... I need a cup of coffee (O not instant I have to make a latte or something) Basically I do loads of things to avoid getting down to the task of marking... I am much better with preparing notes and lessons as I enjoy that a lot more... but marking UGH! The teacher's pet hate!

Very nice topic indeed. Well, my favourite form of procrastination is defiunitely surfing the web and spending time on myLot too.ha! Love it. I love surfing the web, reading up on varied topics that have nothing to do with what I need.It could be history, science, arts anything at all. The tasks I avoid are normlly things like going to the bank or some other government offices. I hate waiting in those queues to get jobs done.LOL

Wonderful... there are more online procrastinators out there! I also hate queueing... I will get up early to be first in line rather than queue, thankfully I can now do most things online... My pet hate in the waiting area now has to be the telephone call centre... push 1 for... push 2 for... But I want to talk to a person! I love reading online, but I also write stuff - so I am working hard at this procrastination thing! Thanks for the response :)

Like you guys, my favorite form of procrastination is spending my time on the Internet, surfing sites like myLot, Facebook or even watching videos online. I must seriously cut down on procrastination and do something more productive instead :/
27 Aug 09
Or you could use your procrastination to earn money!!! Isn't that what we do on here...??? Write some articles, keep a blog... I know there are loads of sites out there that you can earn money on! Have you looked at slice the pie (money for reviewing music) or triond (money for writing articles on anything)?

I am going through a divorce and battling for the custody of my Little four year old son. I am very disturbed and am tempted to go into the loop of thinking and wandering in memories of the past. My favourite or rather much required form of procrastination is to avoid going into the loop of thinking for which I surf the web or involve my self in my hobbies. This way I avoid the lows by avoiding the thinking process.

So, it isn't really procrastination for the sake of doing nothing - which mine is. It seems that your form of procrastintion is actually helping you through a difficult situation and allowing you to deal with it. I KNEW procrastination had a good side and you have just discovered it for me! Thank you. On a more serious note stay strong and keep going - your son needs both parents!
