I want to buy an external hard disk drive. But apparently there is an option of with and without external power. What is the best brand to buy? Seagate? or Western Digital? Does anybody have experience of buying an external hard disk drive?

I have 2 external hard drives and it really depends what you want it for.... If you want it for portability you are better off buying one that doesn't have an external power supply (mine is a western digital 250GB one) If it is to back up your computer and is most likely to stay in one place then I would say one with an external power supply will be cheaper for the amount of storage that you get (mine is a verbatim 1.5TB one) They both work fine and do exactly what I wanted them to do - it really comes down to a choice of cost and what you want it for...

Yes. I think I will do that. I do not know about Verbatim HDD. Will check it out as well. Here I see only Western digital, Seagate and Transcend.

Currently if you want 1TB you are better off with one with an external power supply they seem to be more robust and if the data is that important... Well I am sure you can understand what I am saying?

Well you are going to want one with USB,so that you can use it on all computers.I suggest buying 500GB because the price difference from 320GB to that isn't very large. Also,if you feel like spending a little money, you can get an external hard drive that doesn't require additional power,i.e. the only cord is the USB one.As far as brands go,I would buy Western digital or Seagate. westerndigital.com

Both are the best.. My one friend is using Seagate from last one and half year but he doesn't have any problem with it and computer vendor recommends you for Western Digital. I don't have branded External Hard Disk. I use selfmade 160 GB Harddisk..

Well i would prefer going for Western Digital.Coz thats the company which still makes quality products.I'm using two hard disks of Western Digital ,one is more than 2 years old and other is 8 months. Both HD are running smoothly without any noise. One of my friend has purchased a Seagate HD but that HD is now making noise even after a use of around 6 months. Seagate seems to have dropped quality in competition with WD. Here in India most people prefer Western Digital(WD) coz it comes with 5 years on-site warranty(which is a benefit--if any problem arise WD person will visit your place to collect the HD are take it and will bring new HD to your place) whereas seagete comes with 3 years regular warranty. With onsite warranty you dont have to search for nearest WD service centre. Just call their toll-free no. and they will take the HD from you and get it repaired or replaced whichever is possible. So go for Western Digital...
