Yesterday I watched a quiz show in tv about World War II and I was shocked. There was a part when they showed a vtr from different parts of the world asking History students about place and date of the begginig of WWII. While most of them knew the answer students from USA seemed pretty oblivious about it. I thought it was a joke because I belived that everyone knew it. So how about you? Do you know when (and where) did WWII start?

All history books give the dates for WWII as 1939 - 1945. However, the build up started from 1933 when Hitler was elected chancellor and began rearming and preparing for war, and cranked up in 1938 with the invasion of Czechoslovakia, Kristallnacht in Germany, when the Jews were subjected to such ferocity, and the annexation of Austria. The invasion of Poland in September 1939 kicked everything off, although there was a period of 'phoney war' which ended in May 1940 with the invasion of France and Norway.

Although most people consider WWII to have begun when Germany invaded Poland in 1939, I think it started in 1937, when Japan invaded China. Even if that was not a global conflict, that war lasted for a long time and its final part is considered a part of WWII. If a part of this war is considered part of WWII, why shouldn't the entire war be? And since it began in 1937, I consider that to be the start of WWII.

In my view, the WWII started in 1931 when Japanese army invaded and captured Manchuria of China. It was part of the Japanese strategy. For Japan was a member of axis camp, this invasion could be regarded as the beginning of WWII.
