Is torrents downloading legal

I want to know whether the torrent downloading is legal or not, because many download pirated softwares there and also downloading movies without paying.

Its exactly as they said but remember that laws for each country are different, what could be illegal to download in one isn't in another for example I think people in China don't have to be afraid of downloading anything...

I am in India. M friends are downloading hundreds of new movies and new games per month. Here it is virtually impossible to stop them. Only the ISP has the power to stop piracy.

bittorrent downloading is not illegal by itself. However, downloading copyrighted material is. Most of the movies, music and software I have seen on torrent sites are copyrighted so it would be illegal to download those. If the movie, etc. was made within the last 20 years it is probably still protected under copyright laws and illegal to download.
