In India, still marriage is considered as a sacred tie up in between a man and woman with the consent of their guardians . The ritual of marriage comprises exchange of sight in between the Bride and the Bridegroom, exchange of Garland (Malya Dan),Seven Steps(Saptapadi)in front of Fire God (Agni),keeping the God & goddess witness of the ceremony amidst the chanting of vedic hymn. The whole marriage is conducted by a hindu Brahmin priest in the presence of relatives and friends of both, bride and bridegroom.. Lastly the bridegroom offers the red Sindur (Sort of soil dust)in the forehead of the bride recognizing the acceptance of her whole life responsibility in terms of providing food, shelter, clothing and all earthly happiness and comfort till the end of their life.

Hi jaybanji, You forgot the main event of tying the mangal sutra which the bride has to wear throughout her life till her husband is alive and also for the well being of the husband. The saath pher, Seven steps also means that both of them will share not only the joys but also the sorrows that they face in their lives together.
