When given a proxy it means that you have permission to stand in his place. This is often used by large stock held companies and it means that you turn over the voting rights of your stock to another. It's usually for a limited time.

A proxy is basically a server that functions as the middleman between your internet data and the destination server. As a result of this your IP won't be displayed. Websites recognize your cookies though so if you forget to remove your cookies between spamming a site then you're screwed anyway.
