Emphysema COPD

September 7, 2009 3:42pm CST
In January of this year I became very breathless. A 10 minute walk was taking me up to 45 mminutes, so I went to my GP. I was told I had Asthma, although I had never had this before and was now 49. Every 3 days I continued to go to my GP, for one whole month, by which time I collapsed. I was on life-support for 10 days and in ICU for 15. The diagnosis was COPD Emphysema. I am wondering if there r others out there with this lung condition. I really could do with some support and a litttle help at the moment. I thank you Denise

COPD is a very common disease and a major cause of morbidity worldwide. fortunately, there are therapies that keep the disease at bay if followed strictly.

well, actually there are a few therapeutic options, but in the case of COPD treatment should be correlated with the disease stage. inhaled bronchodilator (long acting beta agonists) and steroid combinations such as Seretide or Symbicort can do a lot of good in more severe cases while tiotropium (Spiriva) can help in the first stages of the disease. of course, treatment should be imposed by a physician based on pulmonary function tests and clinical evaluation. also, pulmonary rehabilitation plays an important role in the later stages of the disease. hope my answer helps. if i can be of any more asistance, i'd be glad to help.
