What type of video formats do dvd players play?

I was wonder what type of video formats can i burn to a dvd to play it on a dvd player?

Today the DVD players are much more advanced. Some can play the avi files directly. But some need to use the software to convert the right format and burn to a DVD and you can also play it by your DVD player. I love China
