If you want to lose weight, read the labels

Do this now. Open the cupboard where you store your food: snacks, packaged, canned, all of it. Every item should have the Nutrition Facts. We're all familiar with the Calories amount. But have you ever actually studied the label. Choose your favorite snack or packaged food. Where do your eyes glance first? I have in front of me a 6 oz. can of Toffee Peanuts. Yum. Calories 140. Oh-oh. That happens to be 140 calories PER SERVING which is 1 Oz. So that means this little can of toffee peanuts, which is irresistibly delicious, would be over 800 calories if I finished it off during a movie. Reading further, I see saturated fat 11% (not good); Fiber 9% (good). Now there is the argument that saturated fat is not all that bad, and I'll leave that to the nutritionists. I only know that if I did not read the labels, I would be drawn into the tastiness of all those things in the cupboard, and of course the desserts in the freezer. Going on a diet is never easy - and they never seem to work anyway. God give me the strength to say, 'One serving only please.'

Well, with being Diabetic, and having High Blood Pressure as well, and now some of the restaurants around us having the Nutritional values available it is interesting to see what things really are, and what really is the Best for us all as well. I know that many times I do check out the Carbs and then the sugars on a food, and then a lot of times if those pass OK for me, I then check the Calories. It is a thing I think that is very important for sure as we get older to be able to actually maintain or loose a little as well.

Did you know that certain medications can actually cause diabetes? Check out the medication Zapraxia(SP?) I just learned about this as a problem yesterday 9-10-09...

I'm not sure people eat more than what they did 30 years ago, but the diabetic community has grown out of proportion. What has changed? I think the packaging on food is more about the eye-pleasing than about the facts of the contents.

An overweight woman goes to the doctor. She is recovering from cancer and has diabetes. The doctor gives her a detailed regiment to follow. On the next visit the woman has lost too much weight. The doctor confused looks at her and asks how did you lose all that weight? The woman replies I followed your regiment exactly. Straight faced the doctor looks back at her and explains that nobody exactly follows our recommendations, and explains to her that she needs to eat more to keep her strength up and be healthy... I just heard that yesterday, true story...

Ha. Well, I wonder if the doctor listens to his own advice. Why do doctors advise patients if they don't think they will follow them? Weird. I thought you were going to slam-dunk me with an out-of-the-ball-park punch line (as you often do) :) I guess the key to the perfect weight is to 'read the labels' and do not get too much of the fatty foods. It's amazing how 'people I know' that need to lose weight (and I might add people I love) pile there plates high with food which amounts to three servings. A little overweight is nice - a lot overweight is -well- not good.

(Laughs) Quiplet,I think that you can do it! I think you are more determied than you know! One of the simplest ways to lose extra weight is to simply remember the basic four food groups you learned in elementary school. And should you still be having weight loss problems, then send me a message.

Honey, the basic four food groups I learned in elementary school was all about meat, dairy and cheese. I'm not practically a Fruitarian. Me thinks I eat too many bananas. :)
