Most of the new Distrobutions such as Ubuntu have what is called a live CD. You take the CD and place it in the drive on your PC and reboot. At the start up look for a key to select the device to boot from. Dell is F12, others use F2. Select the CD drive. You can test out the system without anything going to your hard drive this way you can test drive Linux. Remeber that when you shut down all is lost! This is just a test drive. Just search the web to learn more about Live CD's or send me a message.
