Cost Of Living Experiment: How Much Do You Pay to Make a Salad Sandwich?

Yesterday my wife and I decided we felt like making salad sandwiches for dinner but had to shop for ingredients. On the way to the supermarket as we thought about what we'd need to buy, it occurred to us that it might actually be cheaper to buy 3 sandwiches from Subway than to buy the ingredients and make our own. You can see what happened next at the link listed on my profile. But before telling you the results, I'd like to know, what would it cost you to buy: Baguette, a lettuce, a pound of tomatoes, a pound of onions, 80z mushrooms, 8oz cheese at your local store and does it beat a $10 budget?

hi mark, your $10 budget will probably be around Php480 to us. a sandwich here costs between Php50-Php100 depending on your choice. it is cheaper to purchase the ingredients, you will be able to make several sandwiches. I guess the $10 budget is enough. thank you for this post. ann

Baguette $1.50 to $1.99 1 pound of Roma tomatoes (usually the cheapest) on sale .99 regular price $1.49 1 Iceberg lettuce .99 one pound onions .99 to $1.29 8 ounces of mushrooms $1.49 8 ounces of cheese depending on the brand $1.99 Total average using the cheaper prices $7.95 This is at my local Safeway. Sometimes prices are more or less it just all depends on what you get, and whether it's in season ( mushrooms and tomatoes mainly the other ingredients stay about the same price). I tend to buy as cheap as possible so this would about right for what I'd spend. Now the problem is I feed 5 people so that would be enough for 2 to 3 people depending on if we added something like potato salad to go with it.
