Insufficient priveleges to empty the trash?

I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8 a.k.a. Leopard on a black Macbook. For some time now, I have not been able to empty the thrash. This would include a Windows 7 RC, a random setup.exe file, XP font files, and other system files. Every time I try to empty the trash, I get the "The operations cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items" error. How do I empty the trash without getting this error?
