fiestas and other religious festivals...have you heard of them?

In many parts of our country, fiestas are celebrated in honor of a saint who is believed to be the patron of the place. Fiestas are celebrated lavishly. Food and drinks literally flood the table. The point is, people are spending a lot of money and go into debt just to celebrate fiestas with friends. They are afraid of losing face when they are not able to prepare something. Due to economic difficulties, some are learning the importance of trimming down but the population in general seems to be slow on this. Particulary those living in rural areas. I personally don't believe in extravagant spending just to feed people whom you don't even know. Any opinion on this?
