Internet Gaming: Incredibly Addictive

It seems to me that the internet is a fluid beast that changes to suit the interests of the times. Sites like mySpace, Twitter, facebook, etc. have changed the way people stay in touch with each other and meet new people. But a staple of the internet since its beginning is the gaming facet. Why do we enjoy online gaming so much? Personally I am a scrabble player and I have played every day for the better part of 2 years. When I found that I could play online, I left the board game in the closet and very rarely have used my "nonline" version since. Is it the possibility of meeting new people that drives us to these gaming sites (Pogo, Yahoo, etc.) Or is it sheer boredom? Does anyone out there prefer to play live as opposed to on the internet?
