Why is it?

Why is it that so often I go to a site online and I get a message saying something like "Must have java script enabled to view this site" even though I HAVE java script enabled? Other annoying messages I get are:
- must have flash
- must have latest Adobe
both of which I have.
Any suggestions? I have a Mac.
