Joomla - Any suggestion or tricks for a newbie?

Hello folks.
I would like to try to make a site using a CMS. Lot of my friends said me that Joomla is a really great CMS.
But i never used it before. I downloaded the 1.5 version and installed locally. But to be sincere, I'm a bit confused.
Anyone already used it? And can give me some suggestions or tricks?
Where can I find a simple guide of Joomla for a newbie?
