Nobel Prize is very special in the sense that the entire world watches its awardees and tries to judge whether it has been awarded to the deserving candidates or not. So far, mostly the Nobel Prizes have been awarded to the deserving candidates, if not, to the most deserving candidates. That's why these prizes retain their worldwide attention and recognition. At times, however, when some of these most deserving candidates are left out and/or seemingly less deserving or undeserving candidates are selected for this award, worldwdide discussion and criticism start. Right now we are in the midst of one such controvercy, whether Barack Obama truly deserves the NPP this year or other extraneous considerations have weighed with the Nobel Selection Committee to have decided in his favour. My personal opinion is, both the Nobel Selection Committee and Barack Obama deserve our congratulations, the latter for winning this prestigious prize and the former for taking such a bold and unorthodox decision in this regard this year. After all, what would have been the intention of the founder of this prize, Alfred Nobel, in instituting these prizes. They should be awarded to persons who have contributed the most in their respective fields compared to others. Now take the field of World Peace. Any American President has a potential role to play in the maintenance and promotion of world peace, but in recent times, none of the past US Presidents had any concern, save lip service to this vital requirement. They were more obsessed with maintaining American supremacy all over the world, at times, even at the cost of killing thousands of innocent men, women and children in far off countries where they have no business at all to poke their nose. As a result they incurred the displeasure and disrepute from different peoples all over the world. With Barck Obama taking charge there has been a refreshing and marked change in the usual belligerent attitude of the US policies. He not only has openly pronounced that America does not view any nation as her enemy; in fact, she wants to forge alliance with any and every country in the world. He has announced that the American presence in Iraq will be progressively withdrawn. He has realized the utter waste of squandering American money and American (soldiers')lives on foreign soils, for no good purpose. In fact he is seriously bestowing his attention on revitalizing the war-battered American economy in which effort he has been fairly successful so far. Again look at his stubbornness to halt the nuclear arms race, which he wants to put an end to, at any rate. All these point out to his bonafide intentions, which unfortunately were absent in some of his predecessors. Within such a short time in office, one can do only do so much, but his intentions bear ample testimony to what all he can achieve, given the cooperation from the American people as well as from the world community. I am of the opinion that the Nobel Selection Committee members traced the line of thinking of Barack Obama in the right perspective and took a bold and proactive decision to approve and applaud a genuine Intention, from which alone can meaningful actions originate. They have done the right thing in awarding this prestigioue Prize to a present incumbent of the American Presideny instead of wasting it on any retired World Statesman, or worse still, on a Politician who can do pretty little for World Peace. In contrast, for Barack Obama, his full presidency term is available for him to translate his good intentions into constructive and meaningful actions for the benefit of the entire world community thereby justifying the trust reposed by the Nobel Selection Committee in him. I am sure he will live upto the expectation of every peace loving citizen of the world.
