Are the schools dishing out to much homework?

I'm a high school student of the 10th grade and every day I come home, grab a bite to eat and I sit down for hours of homework witch usually takes me until late at night. As a result of this I’ve had to refrain from countless afterschool activities just so I can finish my homework. I for one see a problem in this, I think school should stop at the final bell instead of carrying on from hours afterwards.

I have noticed a trend toward an excessive amount of homework. Back when I was in school, I remember my cousin , who went to a large school in the city complining about haivng alot of homework to do, while I had hardly any. I asked her to show me how much she had to do one time, and it was quite substantial, but, only relative to mine, I dont believe it took her more than a couple hours a night to finish it. I wonder if the changes in govenment mandates for schools has had an effect on this. Doing every other problem in the math book should be enough. And just how much do you get out of reading a 4th book each semester, 2 should be good. I mean I was in the college prep classes and I still got nearly all my homework done at school.
