I know that most of us have heard about CPR or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. In our country not many people are trained to do CPR. Knowing CPR can really mean the difference between life and death during cardiac arrest. However, only those that are taking medical courses or perhaps healthcare courses are very much aware of CPR. I do conduct training programs on CPR. Now, I have seen many people getting interested about the program despite having a non medical course. I do hope that everyone well be aware of its importance. How about you? Do you find CPR training important? Do you think that it should be taught to everyone?

I think that everybody should have at least some sort of knowledge on CPR. Accidents may happen at any time and if people are aware of what to do in those situations then more casualties could be prevented and more lives could be saved.

Yes, I do agree with you. I know that some people think its only good for those taking medical courses, but obviously, anyone can become a witness to accidents and injuries, thus, there is really a need. I hope that everyone will be able to see it that way.

I honestly think it is a necessity for every day life. Nobody know when accidents may happen and It would be a great opportunity if one could save another person's life just by knowing basic CPR..

i agree with that also. everyone people must know the knowledge on how to save people during the unwanted events in our life. you can save life in you possess this knowledge and skills. i hope every must be aware of it.

I took a course in it in the early 1980's thru work. I had a license for like a year. I couldn't do it now, because once you start you can't stop until the paramedics arrive and I don't have the stamina to do that. funny story, shortly after I got it I was at a food place and a man was choking on some food. My former roommate wanted me to go help him and I told her that he was making noise so he wasn't in distress. Yes, he was uncomfortable, but not in trouble.

that's why the licenses are only good for a year

Yes, although we do not consider it a license. It is some sort of a completion card indicating that you are a cpr provider. Have you renewed your card?

I see. At least you have an idea. Well, if you have taken the course way back 1980, there are some changes that you ought to know. There were additional guidelines issued last 2005. You were right about the choking. For as long as the obstruction is not complete and the person can cough, you do not interfere. You simply encourage the person to cough more so as to take out the obstruction. Best to you and be safe always.

I agree with one of the posters who said it should be mandatory. I think it should be taught in schools. I have to know CPR, and I have to have someone else who knows CPR with me at all times. (It sounds grave, but it could genuinely be the case.) I have a disorder in which I have epileptic seizures, and start losing oxygen to my brain, and quickly turn blue. If I go for four minutes without oxygen, I am in trouble.

Yes, surely CPR is great to learn. With respect to your condition, if you do not mind me asking.. Is it inborn or was it caused by a prior accident. In your case, it is really important to have some companion to watch over you from time to time. You should also avoid any forms of stress since they can trigger and attack.

I see. I do hope that everything well come out fine for you. I know its not that easy to have such problem. I have responded to a lot of epeliptic attacks when I was still working with our rescue unit. 80 percent of those I have responded, were of unknown cause. Either they were born with it or it just appeared suddenly without any history of accidents, trauma or disease. The 20 percent were not epeliptic at the start but have suffered seizures after a stroke, head trauma or other conditions involving the brain. Thank you very much for sharing the information. Take care always.

I think CPR is really important. I took a course 3 years ago, and the average has been changed now to 30 instead of 15, which means things changed, I've heared that they changed it as sometimes the pushing is not done correctly and O2 does not reach the brain which is why they changed it to 30 push I sure think it should be taught to everyone thx

Hi there shery32. It is great to know that you have joined a CPR course. I am sure that its very interesting. You are right, the ratio was changed from 15:2 to 30:2. The new guidelines were issued way back Nov 2005. It really pays to be updated, most especially on matters like this.

One of the big reasons that they changed the ratios is so that it would be consist for every person or child. They eliminated the need to figure out how hold the individual is that is requiring CPR, and to try to remember in a crisis the exact ratio of compressions to breaths. Now, it is standard 2 breathes to 30 compressions for everyone. There has also been some research done that even if someone is uncomfortable with mouth to mouth contact due to not having any protection with them for guarding against germs, diseases, and so forth that the compressions themselves are enough to keep the person alive until the paramedics arrive. aireanna18's home page: http://www.xomba.com/user/aireanna

It's the same in my country not many people are trained in CPR i believe that it's a necessary skill in life and should be taught to adolescents in school. I also think that it should be taught as part of health and safety training in the workplace just my opinion at the end of the day but if you could have the skills to save a life wouldn't you want to know how???

cpr training - CPR return demonstration
Right you are. I do agree with you that it is one thing that should be taught not only on people taking medical courses but also to different schools. In other countries it is already taught during their primary and secondary levels. In the workplace setting, some companies are having such training programs but not every company is doing this. If they are, not all are being taught. But I guess this should be given preference. I am currently conducting CPR training programs to any interested participants, may it be a company, school or organization. I can see that all participants have found the topic very interesting and useful. The picture below shows some of the participants during the CPR training.

I must say I think what your doing is a very admirable thing to do. I would be very interested in that sort of programme or maybe a community awareness scheme to help promote training.

I really find joy in sharing this things. As you can see, when you teach people you mold them into becoming someone in the future. But when you teach people the CPR, you teach them the art of saving lives, and this is something that not everyone do. Even when you save a single life, it is something that is worth a lifetime. If you intend to start with such program, I am sure that you can and will be able to do. Best to you always!

I think it should be something taught to everyone in school. I know it's important but like many if it's not a requirement to learn for a job we don't take the time out to learn how to perform CPR.

I am glad that you are with me on this with respect to the school thing. I know that most schools have not given it much importance in our country but from the way I llok at it, it should be a part of basic knowledge. As for the work environment, it might not be practical for every employee, but then again, if it is incorporated during school time, then the employee will nust have to refresh.

Yes, i think that it should be taught to everyone. As you have mentioned, here in our country it is only taught to people in the medical field. But if almost everyone knows how to do CPR then maybe we can save many lives. Like those in far away places, where hospitals and doctors are miles away from them. Knowing how to do CPR can make a big difference in our lives.

You are right. Educating everyone about CPR will surely improve the chances of survival to any victim suffering from cardiac arrest. Most especially to places where the ambulance service is not very efficient and the response time quite long. I do hope that those in position within our government system as well as lawmakers will realize them and eventually come up with a good program for CPR training and education.

First aide training is essential to be able to handle emergencies such as fires, drowning, suffocating, choking or many others, at times when it will be too late to wait for specialized medical help to arrive. Thank you so much for the knowledge that you've shared to us sir.

I have been trained on CPR. Simply because I am nurse and being a nurse is it a mandatory requirement to learn such procedure. Upon learning the course, I find it very important and useful not only for us but for everyone regardless of course or profession. I definitely recommend this to everyone since it will definitely give you a chance to save a life.

You are lucky indeed to be a nurse and have cpr training as a mandatory requirement. Sad to note that in other courses which are none medical it is not given preference. I can only imagine as to how many lives will be save if everyone is educated on performing the procedure.

Hiya jpsol, Ages ago I took a course in First Aid and some of that was included but now it would seem really outdated so I would like to relearn some of the things. Some of the things have stuck with me too. I would also like to do a course about People who get to suffer stroke and all that because there are things you can do to help but I would only like to know from an expert. Once a Man was in a Street and I kept saying to someone please call an Ambulance this Man is very ill I could tell. They just thought that he was drunk again and I did not know that but in the end I was right he was in a very bad state and they got him in just in time. So that is why I would like to learn useful things again. Thank goodness a Man with a Mobile Phone was passing by my side and he said the same as me because I did not have my mobile Phone at hand to call anyone so he did it for me. It was quite upsetting that everyone was just shrugging their shoulders and walking off. It comes in handy to know something at least.

As a Registered Nurse already in the philippines, we have been trained and equiped with Emergency Nursing, and CPR is included in it. However, as i applied to a local hospital, they were looking for papers that would testify me as a BLS trained personel, which on that moment i have none. I was not hired then. I would say that, it is GREATLY needed. In terms of Regular UPDATES and Revisions of some Procedures. I cant blame why some Hospitals where looking for a person whose BLS trained. They were only after for the benefits of their services. they want only to give the best.

Yes, most often hospitals require course completion cards for such kind of training despite that fact that its already part of the nursing programs. Once reason of course is that skills deteriorate from time to time and guidelines are also updated. So what we have learned today may not be the same procedures later on.

Yes i agree. After attending the seminar conducted by you, i found the importance of it. In fact, i admired you sir for being so witty. Thank you for the knowledge that you have imparted to us. CPR, when performed will keep victim alive until advanced medical help arrives. In order to learn the proper technique, it is very improtant for the rescuer to attend a training course in CPR for it is a skill that you cannot get by reading.I believe CPR is important to everyone and it doesnt matter wether you are a medical or a non-medical course as long as you are interested in knowing about its more easy and remember we are all faced in an unexpected events from our everday living. You never know when you may need to use CPR on a friend, loved one, or even a complete stranger, but knowing the proper CPR procedure in invaluable skill to perfect.

I hope that many more people will see it your way so that more and more people will become life savers...

Hi cathy, I am very honored indeed to have you in our training. It is something that I am really happy to share with knowing that it is indeed very useful and worthwhile. Some people take CPR training to comply with school of work requirements, but soon after they finish, they realize that indeed it is very useful and inf fact quite important may it be in work or at home or just about anywhere. I hope you continue learning and keep on updating.
