Me, it takes hours...really. I'll stare at the ceiling, and the wall (our clock produces a red projection of the time on the wall) for hours. Tossing and turning, just listening to him sleeping sound next to me. Why can he fall asleep so fast? My mom took me to the doctor when I was little--because I would never sleep--and he suggested white noise. I don't think that's going to work for him, and I'm not sure sleeping with headphones is really my thing. However, I'm wondering if it's just me. Maybe I'm crazy, but it's hard for me to turn it off...to just...let...go... So any tips and tricks on how to doze off to sleep? Or do you just pass out, in less than 5 minutes like everyone else I know? What's the secret?

This depends on how sleepy I am. What I usually do is I don't force my self to sleep because I end up wasting my time tossing and turning on the bed. I would rather lay to sleep when I am really very tired and sleepy so I sleep right away..If I still am not sleepy, I try doing some useful stuff or just surf on the internet just to have something to do. :D

I used to do the same thing! You are not helping yourself by staying in bed tossing & turning. That just results in your body getting rested, but still not getting the sleep you need- therefore you will never get comfortable! Now I don't go to bed at all until I absolutely can't keep my eyes open. Stay up but do something not to active, such as watching tv or reading a book. Nothing too engaging, just something that occupies you but also allows you to get sleepy. It also helps me to sit/lay on the couch with a blanket and pillow while doing this. Sometimes I even fall asleep for a few mins on the couch, but then I realize it's a good time to drag that pillow upstairs and I will crash right into the bed. But trying to sleep when your not fully ready is just a waste of time!

Oh, p.s. I keep a spiral notebook, and anything I'm thinking of late at night while I'm on the couch watching TV- I make a list in the notebook of the things I need to do/get, calls I need to make, bills I need to pay, etc. It helps to get it out of your head when you know you have it all on a list for tomorrow.

I keep very busy all day, mostly mentally busy. I am always out of bed, wide awake and rearing to go before 5.00am. I seldom get to bed before midnight, but I am asleep just about as my head hits the pillow, or as soon as I have wriggled into a comfortable position. I'm afraid I'm not in a position to offer advice, but it might help to take note of what you do in the hours before bed. Do you exercise your mind? Do you watch TV? Does anything tend to make you feel sleepy? I know with some people a hot bath will make them sleepy, but a shower will wake them up. Have you tried a glass of warm milk before bed?

Hello cloudwatcher, I am mentally busy from the moment I wake up. From the moment I realize I'm awake, my dreaming are flooding back and I'm analyzing what happened last night. Then, I get to my computer *which I think has me wired, and is part of the issue* and do my homework/business and research. My mind is constantly running, analyzing, conceptualizing, etc. The television makes me think more--to me it's an active experience--and I can hear the sounds of electronics when they are running....so at night, I hear everything, and television makes it worse. Maybe exercising before bed would help, but that always messed up my eating schedule, because I'd either get hungry, and then can't sleep, or the natural oxygen rush adds to my natural energy.... Warm milk grosses me out, lol... but herbal teas might have hope! Thank you for your suggestions!

Hey Kavis, Keeping my eyes closed is probably the only thing that helps. Sometimes I feel like I'm just lying there forever...I just pray for the sun to come up! I'd rather have the day be here, so I can just be up...instead of having him wonder why I get out of bed every night. :/

10 to 15 minutes at best. Once i go to bed, i generally try to forget all other things of the world. Besides, it is my habit to sleep almost instantly.

I just sleep for 5 hours daily, no nap in the midday. It because I have to go for college and others activity. If someone didn't sleep it will give bad health effect. Sleep will happen if you been tried and sleepy. So do more activity and enough sleep everyday. Do you ever think how many times people spend their time for sleep. It's more than another activity.

Hello saifulbabe, College might be why I don't sleep. I think about it all the time, and devote myself wholeheartedly to my studies. I never understood how some people could just waste their lives away while they slept. I've never been a big sleeper. Maybe I should try taking a nap, if I'm ever tired during the day (or have time)lol, and see how my sleep schedule plays out.. Go to bed early, can't sleep. Go to bed late, can't sleep, wake up later. Hm. Work hard, study endlessly, far too curious and too much to see...not enough time...

That is exactly my problem. I really find it hard to sleep right away. So most often, I do not go to bed unless I am very much tired already. It would take me around 30 minutes to sleep when I am very much sleepy already. If I just lay down and try to sleep and I am not that sleepy, It would take more than an hour for me to be able to sleep.

Well, through the years, I was able to adjust my body clock to a certain time of sleep. My usual sleeping time is 10:00 pm and if I am going to sleep earlier than that time, I would have difficulty getting it. I would just toss and turn until it I reach the time. In case I have to stay awake longer than 10:00 pm, I need to be busy with something or else I would fall asleep instantly. For someone who has a regular routine job, they will be able to develop sleeping time but for those whose schedule is changing from time to time, they are usually the one who has difficulty getting a good night sleep.

I go to school full time, and have my own business. I'm a thinker...and once a routine is found, life happens :) It's 3:03 am, I was in bed for about 3 hours....can't do it...

How long it takes me to fall asleep usually depends on a variety of factors including how tired I am, the time of day, how active I have been during the day, how much sleep I have had overall and of course any obvious disturbances. Five years ago I was diagnosed with Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome which is characterised by a normal requirement for sleep which is out of sync with a normal circadian rhythm. In light of this, I found it difficult to fall asleep at the time I was expected to and would lie awake for hours and hours; thousands of thoughts running through my head, complete consciousness, awareness, not particularly unable to unwind and relax but unable to flick that switch which would allow me to fall asleep. No medications, routines or behavioural therapies helped to resolve my condition as few medical practitioners had a sound understanding of the disorder and so it is something I have had to come to terms with. A commonly held myth is that exercising more in an effort to exert more energy will cause you to be more tired and therefore sleep better. Medical trials have shown that this does nothing to enhance the quality of sleep and only the duration of sleep by ten minutes. Close inspection of your diet for foods which may be containing excess levels of caffeine or sugar may hold the key in helping you to fall asleep and there are many remedies available (often containing lavender and jasmine) which will help you to drift off into a natural sleep. Whether these actually work or not, I'm probably too sceptical to say. It is important to remember that everybody is different and what may be considered normal for one person is impossible for another. I find I fall asleep most quickly when I turn the lights out 20-30 minutes before I want to sleep. This is known to induce the secretion of hormones which make you feel tired and which help you to sleep. Sleep hygiene rules state that taking baths or showers before bed actually make you feel more alert and not to eat 2 hours before you intend to sleep. Removing objects from the bedroom which are not associated with sleep such as televisions will also encourage the sub-conscious notion that when you are in bed, it is for sleep and sleep only.

School is always on my mind, life, the world, people. I think about everything, and have a hard time unwinding. Yoga is one of the more helpful elements that I've added to my life; however, I believe having more insight on proper formation, other positions, etc, would be nice. What do you know about yoga? :)Meditation?

I also have the same problem as you before, but now I can fall asleep quickly just in 5-10 minutes, and you can try this, maybe it also works for you: pls keep a shedule full of as many things as possibly you can do, keep yourself busy all the time, doing works, reading books, running, washing clothes. some physical exercises and a variety of tihings you can think about, then you will find you have no time to think about if sleep quickly or no, and may fall asleep just as you hit the pillow.

my boyfriend has the same problem as yours. i conclude several reasons as follows, 1. overpress. perhaps the press from job, relationship or some unpleasant things that you always remember so that make you can not go to sleep. 2. boring. perhaps you are very free that nothing can be attractive for you, so you feel that you have full enegy and can not sleep. 3. overtired. maybe you are very tired every day and it makes you very nervous and can not be calm down. so when you lay in the bed and wanna sleep. your tension still influence you. in that case, you cannot go to sleep easily. i also come up with some solutions you can have a try. 1. maybe you also have a boyfriend or husband, both of you can jogging after dinner and talk about some relexed topic with no job or sth. unpleasant. 2. this may be a secret, but i would like to share with you. making love can help you sleep easily, you can have a try. 3. acctually the biggest problem is yourself, just relax yourself and do not make you pay attention to anything. you must believe that nothing is more important than your health. i suggest you have a try and hope you will be better as soon as possible. you know i can sleep in less than 5 minutes without any exaggration. because i have no thing to worry about. if the troubles come, just think how to takle them not make you worry. wish everything goes well .

Well yeah it just how you are nothings wrong with you That's just like my father. My father whenever he sits down and falls alseep in like 2 seconds infront of the T.V. As long as hes not doing something phsyical he most likey falls asleep right away if hes not interested that much in the program. Now as for me it takes me about 25mintues to go to sleep. im thinking its just casue you stare and the ceiliing. Try closing your eyes and thinking of something cool, interesting somthing like that. Thats what i do and i just doze off and go to sleep. you should try it !

Hi Pitgull. Maybe you're just a night person. Your mind becomes active at night and maybe that's why you find it hard to get some sleep. Try drinking warm milk to relax yourself. Maybe that can work.

For me, it takes about 3 hours or long time to fall sleep. In fact, I guess there are lots of people who are suffering such a problem. Under the stress of busy work, supporting the family, buying a new house, or hunting for a better job, people in such a society have to take hours to fall asleep. Everytime when I can't fall sleep quickly, I will surf the Internet using my cellphone. Then, I may fall asleep when I get tired. By the way, don't drink amy coffee or tea before going to sleep because both tea and coffee are full of caffeine. Have a nice day!

it takes about 5-10mins for me to sleep.. maybe because I'm a sleepy head. The secret is to clear your head of anything, breath and relax. As for your case I guess you have a sleeping disorder so try to visit the few doctors for some remedies. Also consider going to yoga sessions maybe it helps. br, jamzy
