While copying some important data from my computer to my Pen Drive, within few minutes I got the error message of " Access denied ,system volume information can not be copied"..But don't remember of having such folder in my drive and I am totally unaware of such folder. But I suspect this folder could have been created by some virus. I am not able to even open the folder. What kind of virus if, it is a virus? How to delete them and which anti virus software will help me to remove this?

By the way, the reason why you have never seen it before is that the folder is hidden. However, if you check "show hidden files and folders" in your folder options, then you will be able to see it. It is right inside drive C and drive D.

Thanks for the useful link..Just now I happened to know after reading this article that the system volume information is the folder related to the system restoration. As I had no experience with this , I thought of it might be created by some virus programs. Now I am clear in that..With the help of the step by step procedure given in the above link, I tried to remove it..But as thought this may affect the system restoring procedure, I did not remove that. But I am not able to restore my system also.OF course, I don't know the procedure to restore the system, without the aid of any software.I need to restore my system as its working slow nowadays..Thanks for your response to this discussion.

Hi you are welcome! Actually, windows system restore can be found under "system tools" if you go from START to "all programs" to accessories. However, if your computer is becoming slow, system restore will not help that. You either have to reformat your system, defragmenting your hard drives may also help a bit. System restore is useful for example, if suddenly your computer gets a virus, you can run system restore and restore your computer to an earlier state (either saved by your computer or if you install a new program) before the virus has affected your computer. This won't get rid of all viruses though, as there are annoying ones that are not affected by system restore.

From the first response, I came to know that the system volume information is the folder corresponding to the system restoring property and it should not be deleted. There is no any problem with the pen drive also.In the link, provided by our first respondent, they have clearly mentioned the step by step procedure to access the folder for various operating systems. But I did not delete the folder as it may not be possible for us to restore the system , if we want. Thanks for your response to this discussion.

Hi, This not a virus of any kind.... System Volume Information folder is a folder (hidden) which is created by the Operating system and cannot be copied........It is present in each drive and contains necessary information about the drive and much more. You would have tried to copy the entire dive into the pen drive....first open the drive and then select all and then try to copy it down. have funn.

Thanks for the information..As I was not able to copy or even to delete them,I suspected them as virus..Because, most of the folders created by some virus are behaving like this only..But after seeing all of your responses, now I am able to understand about it..But because of this, we are not able to copy the entire drive,if we want to do so for some specific reasons like formating. Thanks for your response.

format your pen drive, no virus can survive formatting. That would probably be a worm.

Sorry. The I did not explain my problem clearly so that you can understand easily. The folder 'system volume information" is in my computer and not in the pen drive. Now only I came to know that this system volume information is not a virus and it is responsible for the system restoration. Also if we delete the folder, we can not restore our system back to the previous date and hence it is not advisable to delete them. For further details, please refer the link give by the first respondent. Thanks for your response.

Hi this is not a virus. It is found on your drives since it contains vital informations for your drive and it should be hidden too.
