speaker and listener - Learning to listen is really an art and not many people can understand the intentions of speakers.
If one wants to become a successful listener, all the 5 stages are necessary. Learning to listen is really an art and not many people can understand the intentions of speakers. So, in my opinion, the second step "Attending- paying attention to signal" and the third step "Understanding- getting the meaning" are the most important two stages if one wants to learn something from the speaker or it is really a waste of time. Of course, when we have understood the intentions of speakers, it is still very important to remember what we understood.

Listening is an art as well.It becomes more so when you are pretending to listen to boring conversations. The right monosyllable is required every now and then to show you are in rapt attention to the speaker. But seriously, if you are a good listener, even total strangers tend to confide in you and you tend to get all kinds of information that you would not have gathered otherwise.
