Do we have to teach religion to our children?

I believe that parents have a responsibility to give their children, at least a basic understanding of their own religion so that children have a strong foundation to start their life on. Or do you think children can learn better and more about religion and spirituality, if they are allowed to learn everything on their own, without parents ever imposing their own religious beliefs on them?

Yup, as many responsible parents would do. Its one of the most basic foundations about life. One way to teach love and compassion to our kids is by teaching them religion. A family that is not built in the foundation of love and God would find it hard to succeed and have a better life in the future.

True, we have to teach our children the religious principles to put them on the right path. But the problem is most of the major religious practitioners do not see eye to eye with each other on some important personal and social issues and if that be so how are our own religiously brought-up children going to fill this gap in future? Don't you think a certain amount of freedom of thinking must be encouraged in our children to think for themselves and come to the right conclusions to reduce the inter-religious tensions?

yes, its very important to teach religion to children becoz if not taught then they might choose the wrong path of crime as religions teach better ways to live life without any wrong means. also the children would be more attached to their religion and thats a good thing.

In the name of teaching religion to our children to make them choose the right path, are we also not, inadvertently of course, planting seeds of division in those young and impressionable minds about "our religion" and "their religion", which in later years could fan the fires of religious intolerance on which so often the greedy politicians so comfortably thrive ?

My concern is, has our own understanding of God been complete and comprehensive, so that we can confidently teach our children what they should do and what they shouldn't. Or should we also be continuously upgrading our knowledge of God so that we tread the right path and possibly can lead our children also in the right path?

I think that our belief system is passed on to our children naturally by the way we act and present ourselves. Actions speak louder than words. Your children will learn something from you for sure.

That's very much true. But when it comes to children asking questions about 'who or what is God?' or 'Why should we obey God or religious rules and regulations?',do we start giving them our own understanding of God or do we encourage them to think for themselves and find out the truth themselves?
